Crazy dog owners
So I'm working last sunday night, closing the electronics department by myself for the 12th weekend this year because my good for nothing coworkers decided to take the holiday weekend off. There were so many call outs that the whole store is working with a skeleton crew, and there's absolutely nobody to cover my department for a lunch break.
So, about two hours past time for my break, I get locked off the register, so I go up front to hand off the keys to a supervisor and go on break. Only when I get there, the supervisor pulls me outside. I turns out a customer has caught a stray pit bull wanderin' around outside. No tags, just a fancy harness, which is strange for a pure breed dog. Since my supervisor is about 5'4" and about 120 lbs, and I'm 6'2 and heavier than neutron star, he goes to call animal control while I hold on to the dog.
Naturally, he gets caught up in the rush, and I end up watching the dog for A LONG time. Eventually, I'm totally sick of it, so I hand off the dog to a customer who raises pit bulls, and head back inside, to check out what's up. It turns out animal control won't do anything unless the dog is hurt, and nobody has answered the pages for a lost dog. We don't know what to do, and since there was no tags, we have no one to call. Eventually, we find out that the customer has already taken the dog home, since nobody claimed it.
By this time, I have to go home in an hour, so instead of taking a lunch break, I just go home an hour early. I find out later the next day that the owner finally answered the page and hour and a half after we first found the dog, and the other customer had already taken the dog home.
Then, a bit after my shift had started, and I'm in the back, fixing a computer, I get a call. It's the dog's owner, who now says that she's going to get a lawyer because I gave her dog away. She says "That dog was in your care, and it was your legal responsibility to take care of it!". I'm like, WTF? What law book says I have to take care of stray dogs I find in the parking lot without tags? Eventually, after some loud arguing over the phone, my manager takes over, and pretty much tells her off. I go back to fixing the computer.
Later on, when I'm back on the sales floor, a cop comes up. Turns out the bitch called the cops on me. The guy's real nice about things, just asks some questions, and I give honest answers. I tell him about her legal threats, and he pretty much laughs them off. He also tells me that she'll most likely be fined for not having tags or a leash on the dog.
Here's where it gets worse. They come back into the store looking for me. A coworker that was working when they came to claim the dog pointed them out to me. Real hairy redneck types. So I'm like, "Oh shit." Then I turn to my two other coworkers and I say "Hey, for the rest of the day, my name is 'Julio' ". So they go with it, and pretty soon I'm getting used to my new name. Eventually, they ask one of my coworkers where I am, and they tell them that I've already went home for the night.
Ain't that some shit? They're stupid enough to lose their dog, and they want to blame me. After I stood there holding that dog for close to an hour while they went about shopping, making sure it didn't get hit by a car, or run off and maul some kit. One hour, they paged for them half a dozen times, and they didn't answer. Do a person a favor, and all they give you in return is grief.

Hey, thanks for taking care of the dog, that was nice of you, I'm sure the new (read: RESPONSIBLE) owner is taking good (again, read; BETTER) care of the dog

Some foolish dog owner lost the dog, he took care of the dog, then a concerned fellow took it home (who knows why) and the original owner came back to the store and blamed it on him.

Yeah, I know pit bulls can a be a bit unpredictable, but it wasn't the dog's fault it had stupid owners.

At least the dog has gone to a better home and you didn't end up having to deal with stupid people in person.

You spoke too soon.
They came back to the store tonight. Only this time, they tried to sugar coat it all. "I've been up all night crying! Could you please please help us? That dog was like a member of our family!".
All I could tell 'em was it was a guy in his late 20's/early 30's, with short, dark hair. I have a hell of a time remembering faces.
The dude with her was trying to make a deal about how it was my fault, but I just stood my ground, and told it how it was. He wants to blame me, even though he should be blaming himself.
Damn rednecks.
