When I had a white pickup, I used to let it go until it was a light brown/tannish color before I would wash it. Usually wound up being once a year that it would get washed. It would come out and you would hear "Damn... you have a WHITE pickup!?" Now that I have the red one, I let it go until it looks horrid, and then wash it. About every two months. Take it to the closest car wash, dump in $5 in quarters and hose it off quick like and take it for a spin on the freeway to dry it off.
I could really care less how my vehicles look so long as they drive.

I usually hose excess dirt off, then use Gold Class wash with a sheepskin mitt. Rinse that off and dry with one of those Absorber cloths. If it needs it, Ill hand buff the car with Meguiars Polish, then apply a hand coat of Klasse, and then top it off with P21 wax.
If the car is just a bit dirty I'll usually just bring it to the wash bay and hose it, soap it, and dry it.

2)first i pour 1/4 cup of goldclass wash in the CLEAN water bucket then i spray the hose in it and fill it half way. then i fill up the other (dirty mitt rinse) bucket up to 3/4.
3) set the hose to the highest setting to spray down wheel well, under the car, and wheels. spray my diluted wheel/tire spray on the wheels and wheel well. use the different brush for each job. hose down wheels when done. spray the whole car from top down.
4) with the sheep skin (the one thats meant for the upper body) already dipped in the clean water bucket with suds i clean the roof first. after each panel i rinse the mitt in the dirty water bucket and then pic up more soapy water from the clean water bucket. when im done with the upper body i switch to the other mitt for the lower body (bumpers etc etc) and continue on. if the car starts to dry i just lightly spray the top and let the water soak down
5) hose the car slowly from top down.
6) i whip out the waffel weave micro fiber towels. i use the one meant for the upper body first and dry down the roof. and work my way down the car. i use another towel for the lower body. another for wheels, and another for door jambs when im done witht he car.
7) it depends if im lazy ro w/e or if i have to do the other car... if im not lazy or if im not busy i usually just QD (quick detail spray) the whole car down and QD the door jambs too. condition the tires, plastic, leather etc etc...
well 7 steps... who wants to know my other steps for claying, polishing, sealant, and top coats? oh yeah and itnerior detail and engine bay detailing? hmm... im obsessed.

Are you an Autopian? Anywho, what pads and polish do you use. I tried PB 2.5 with a yellow pad and noticed I got holograms.

I rinse the wheels first and use my wheel specific mitt on them. I rinse the wheels when I'm done scrubbing. Then I rinse the whole car off and start washing from the top down. I usually rinse the mitt after each section. Once I get to the lower half of the car where the real nasty dirt is I switch to my mitt that I only use on that part of the car and wash away. Pretty much when I'm done washing a section I rinse it off so no soap sits on the car. When I'm done I take a california water blade and get most of the water off, then go back with a towel or chamois to get the little spots.

ANYWAYS, what brand of pads are you using? LC? if so try the durastrand (something like that...dont exactly remember) pads (the one that looks like yellow frnech fries). what were the steps before polishing for you and what machine are you using at what speed?

summertime = mr clean gun + wax. works amazingly well.
wintertime = take some of those japanese car wipes out to the car and wipe it down good. then break out some spray on wax and rub it in. looks fine. all the wax comes off in the first spring wash anyway.

Those Mr. Clean guns are a complete ripoff. They do not work AT ALL. I spent 10 minutes using that tiny little spray to hose the entire car down, AFTER using the standard spray to get rid of all the soap, and it left MASSIVE water marks on the hood and trunklid of my dad's FD. It's been sitting in the garage ever since.

you dont know how to use it.... they work well on cars with little dirt (dust, pollen, etc) but they have a tough time removing dirt on really dirty cars.

yeah, its always worked fine for me.
you need to make sure all the dirt is off the car before you use the mist spray, otherwise it won't work. usually i scrub it thorougly 3 times before i use the mist spray.
also, you really need to keep the filter clean. buy one in the beginning of spring. it should last easily until the fall.
