My son, who has been living in Japan for a year (his third time there), just got home last night and I asked him about this subject as he was unpacking t-shirts he had picked up because they had stuff on them that made no sense for what they were saying in English. He says we're being being played most of the time by these signs. Apparently they do this on purpose just to screw with us. Some things like his t-shirts and some other stuff are just honest "we have no idea how to translate it to English correctly" situations. Many Japanese people he says read and understand English better than we do, they just can't speak it very well.
