Motorcycle question...

When shifting a motorcycle, you press down to go down a gear, lift up to go up a gear, right?

So, let's say you are cruising along in 6th gear and you get off the highway and come to a complete stop. Do you have to click down 6 times to get back to first?

Edit: This is totally serious... I've always wanted to know the exact mechanisms of how it works.

Neutral is usually one above first.

You sometimes hit false neutrals between other gears.

So... If I'm in 6th gear, can I half click into neutral and then full click would go straight to what?

yeah, a half click, as in half way between gears, drops you into nuetral.


usually only between 1st and 2nd gear, but on older bikes with more worn transmissions you can happen into nuetral anytime you don't fully move the shift lever.

Do bikes have any sort of display that tells what gear the tranny is currently in?

Some do. Many just have a neutral light or nothing at all.

no dirt bike I know of does, and thats pretty much all my experience there.

I always find myself in 5th gear tapped out grabbing for more gears but not having any. Granted, at that point I'm already traveling at ~ 100mph on dirt.

And nuetral is oft times hard to find on a dirt bike, takes practice and knowing the feel of your bike to get it every time. Usually its try and click it up and then ease out the clutch lever to see if its in nuetral. Watched to many people flip bikes by dropping the clutch while it was still in 1st. Usually it just kills the engine, but sometimes it won't.

I want to get a motorcycle eventually, so I am just trying to figure it all out now... And that's something that always puzzled me.
