bungee jumping sucks, really. Its over too quickly, you have that one moment of freefall and thats it. thats what I always loved about jumping. There's nothing like a 30,000 foot freefall when youre looking for one hell of a rush

yeah, a typical civilian skydive would start somewhere around 9-10K feet, sometimes a little higher The jumper freefalls until somewhere around 4,000 AGL, then pulls his chute. A HALO jump starts between 25000 and 35000 feet, and you freefall until typically around 3000 AGL. The lowest I ever got a canopy was around 1100 AGL, had to cut away and pull my reserve. When youre falling that fast, 1100 feet above the ground isnt much to work with. But starting from that high, it is the absolute wildest thing--when you get lower you can tell youre getting lower because things on the ground start looking bigger and bigger, but when you first exit, its more a sensation of flying than falling. Problem is that after you do things like this, everything that you used to like, like roller coasters and things like that, suddenly doesnt do that much for you.

I'm familiar with the term and concept of a HALO jump, but aren't HALO jumps kinda... pricey?

That must be an amazing rush. Jumping out of a plane at that height. What kind of speeds do hit on your way down?

Terminal velocity is right around 120 mph, but if you tuck into a dive you can go faster. I read somewhere once that the speed record for a freefall without any special equipment was over 300 mph. Then, there was Joseph Kittinger, who rode a balloon to an altitude of 102,800 feet, then jumped from it. There were many claims made, but his own telling of the story puts his speed at .9 Mach. He used a stabilizing drogue chute on that jump, and the speed and altitude records still stand today. If I recall right, this happened in the early 60s. thats gotta be one sick ride...

Terminal velocity should vary quite a bit by altitude, so 120 was probably easily exceeded in a HALO jump. I knew about Kittinger, reaching near the speed of sound on his way down, so I am guessing that tucked you would probably hit around 300 mph at that altitude (30K to 20K feet).

emphasis in a HALO was always more on control than speed of descent, so we didnt train to dive for better speed. The trick of it is to stay close to the rest of the team so that you can all land in the same small area. I never did a HALO jump just for the fun of it, but it was probably my favorite part of it all.

Still, diving from that altitude would be quite a trip....now youve got me wanting to go do one again.....

HALO was one of the reasons I was looking to go into the Army.

Sounded like one hell of a fun time.

Staying close to the team must be pretty challenging. Especially with the air being thinner up there and having a limited ability to slow down (no speed brake to hit).
