Because the verse does not seem to present a pun or double entendre, it is unlikely that it means both things at once. We favor the interpretation that God here is announcing a "grace period" (in the literal sense!) of 120 more years before the flood. It would seem more natural to understand this pre-flood period, and not human life in general, as the time during which God's Spirit "contends" with humanity.

Other commentators take this to mean that human lifespans will be drastically reduced. A difficulty with this view is that several Old Testament figures live longer, including most of the people whose lifespans we know from the remainder of Genesis (Genesis 11:11-32, Genesis 25:7, Genesis 35:28, Genesis 47:9; see also Job 42:16).

How about the fact that DNA can only replicate so many times before it loses functionality? There is NO way anyone lived to be 700 years old and that inbreeding reduced the gene pool: We'd all still be inbred, and functionality would be destroyed completely. There would be NO human race. Inbreeding after 3 or 4 generations would cause irreparable damage.

As recently as about a month or two ago, The Israeli Antiquities Authority cited Google's Satelite image of something at the bottom of the Red Sea.. which, if found to be true, would validate that Biblical Account.
