Oneflytrini took his triptronic BMW to the 1/4 mile and got a best of 16.6 at 83 mph.

You might remember him as the guy with the Corona colored FD or the guy with the "one eyed" girlfriend back in the RX-7 club (I'm not making fun of her).
Are these BMW's really this slow or was this just a bad day? Heck my friend's stock Integra runs high 15's.
Any personal experiences with these cars?
wonner 10-16-2005, 05:03 PM Standing 1/4-mile: 14.7 sec @ 94 mph
But thats a 6-speed manual.

I don't trust those magazines and their times. I want to know what the average Joe runs under "normal" conditions.
c00lduke 10-16-2005, 05:51 PM I think it sounds a bit slow, but it seems all around that he needs a bit of practice.
SpartanTS 10-16-2005, 05:51 PM I've driven a couple of 3 Series BMW's. If that's a 325i, then that car should run mid to high 15's. 184HP 2.5L I6 w/ 6MT.
If it were a 330, which with that wheel package is isn't, then those cars will run 14's all day even with a bad driver and an auto.
If it's a 323, which it could be, then it'd be even slower. 170 HP 2.5L I6
But when you pair up an auto tranny with 184HP, it's gonna be slow. I would have expected high 15's low 16's, but 16.6?
jimlab 10-16-2005, 07:24 PM The key is the 60-foot or "short" time. 2.599 seconds is abysmal.
sir rupert hobo 10-16-2005, 08:07 PM i found one thing a bimmer is good for. the turning of the steering wheel.
that's the beauty of it and it should stay that way!
That's slow for sntp's mini van.
rx-7_Z06 10-16-2005, 11:34 PM well that better be some lemon of a 325 because that is real slow.
jimlab 10-16-2005, 11:56 PM That's 4,300 lb. Lincoln Town Car slow... :)
My vert is 3840lbs and an auto. Ran 15.91@88mph (uber slow) letting it shift. Short time was 2.359.
To compare my 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4wd ran 16.44 @ 86.31mph. 4.0 automatic. Weighed around 3300lbs and was rated at 180 (?) hp.
2ndGen.Rocket 10-17-2005, 07:05 AM Sounds like it was a good trade for the FD.
rx-7_Z06 10-17-2005, 08:39 PM My '86 base model FC was faster than that BMW turd. I ran a 16.3 with a 2.2 60ft. Fucking continental all season tires...
I want to ask him why he traded his FD for that, but i guess it will just be pointless.
jimlab 10-17-2005, 08:56 PM I want to ask him why he traded his FD for thatIt starts every time he turns the key and doesn't sound like a chainsaw on crack...
I'll deal with some noise if it means being faster than 16 seconds in the 1/4 mile.
SpartanTS 10-17-2005, 09:04 PM It would have been at least tolerable if he didn't have a "tiptronic".
He would have done better buying a Pre-owned 330i.
doubt many ppl buy BMWs to go fast (not saying you cant, in the sense that money can make anything fast).

It's that damn propellor I tell u. The badge what they want.
Personally, I can think of a bajillion cars i'd rather have over a 3 series BMW. Why buy a car that's popular among chicks and gay men :dunno:
Alex-7 10-19-2005, 08:45 AM The E46 is probably the BEST all around car you can buy.
They make fast ones and slow ones. this guy bought a slow one, get over it.

M3 aside ;) That's a totally different beast.
Alex-7 10-19-2005, 09:20 AM I'm not talking about m3's
I have an '01 323ci (detuned 2.5) with a 5spd on the lot right now. It's not fast. but it's still fun to drive.
A regular 330 makes the same power (almost) and an E36 M3.
Day in day out you can't beat a 3 series. No matter what motor you choose.
Who the hell would take a tip' 323 to the drag strip and be suprised with sub FD #'s?

You can't beat having 50/50 balance, RWD, and a smooth inline 6.
The guy who traded his fd for that BMW must have needed a daily driver, otherwise, you couldn't pay me to trade an fd for an automatic 3 series.
