Two teenage girls who worked at a nursing home have been charged with abuse, accused of taunting, spitting on and groping the breasts and genitals of residents who suffered from Alzheimer's disease and other dementia disorders.

According to the criminal complaint, filed Monday, 19-year-old Brianna Broitzman and 18-year-old Ashton Larson laughed earlier this year as they spat in residents' mouths, poked and grabbed them, and at times mocked them until they screamed.

Broitzman and Larson, who worked as part-time aides at the home, have been charged as adults.

No one answered the phone Thursday morning at Broitzman's home. There was no information in court records on attorneys for either teen.

Complaint: Eight teens involved
Four other teens who worked with them at the Good Samaritan Society were charged as juveniles for failing to report the incidents.

A total of eight teens were allegedly involved in the incidents, but there was no record of criminal charges being filed against two of them.

Broitzman and Larson are charged with assault, abuse of a vulnerable adult by a caregiver, abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, disorderly conduct and failing to report suspected maltreatment. All are gross misdemeanors.

If found guilty, Broitzman and Larson "most likely will face suspended jail sentences and probation, so they'd have the threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble," Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

During interviews, Larson admitted to actions such as spitting water on a resident, lying in bed with a resident, touching a resident on the buttocks, inserting her finger into a resident’s rectum, antagonizing a resident, humping a resident and putting her hand over a resident’s mouth because that resident would scream, court papers state.

Court papers state that during interviews Brianna Broitzman admitted that she and Ashton Larson had poked a resident in the breast. She also stated that numerous videos and photos had been taken of residents between January and April 2008, according to the court papers.

One stated Broitzman put her bare rear end in one resident’s face and that Larson would rub vigorously on residents’ genital areas to sexually arouse them.

The Minnesota Department of Health released a report in August showing that 15 residents with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia disorders were abused at the facility between Jan. 1 and May 1.

Group allegedly laughed about incidents
According to the complaint filed Monday, one of the aides said the group gathered at work or school to "talk and laugh about the incidents."

Mark Anderson, administrator at the Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea, told WCCO-TV that the past few months have been difficult for the staff, the home's residents and their families.

"We are just really thankful that the proceedings are moving forward and hopefully can see some closure to this whole process," Anderson said.

OMG!! I worked in a nursing home for a little while & i would never even think of doing these things...Those girls need punished to the fullest extent of the law. They knew exactly what they were doing & to make matters worse, they thought it was hilarious!! They are definately lucky that a relative or friend of mine wasn't in that nursing home that's for damn sure!

My grandfather was just died over the thanksgiving holiday at age 93 due to a trauma to the head. He was in a care facility for Alzheimers, and a WW2 vet.

As an Alzheimers patient, the police are not sure if it was due to a fall or if someone robbed him and he tried to stop it. But the fact remains that things were missing from his room, including his wedding ring off of his finger. The police cannot make any charges because he could not talk and make a statement.

The funeral is going to be later on this month because the coroner had to be involve. But every place we had him at there was neglect in every single place.

This is sad news, I hope no family goes thru anything like this....it sickens me that more of this is going on.

BTW, I have thought twice about posting about this for obvious reasons....

that is fucked up. depending on the facts you may have a good case against the caregiving facility.

Unfortunately, I don't think the family can due to lack of evidence.

This is the modern world, we have way more dignity than to allow someone to die in their own home around family members, thereby devaluing that home.

i respect that the decision is a very private choice for the family.

i still think it might be worth your time to consult with an attorney (they should do it for free).

in essence, just because the police cannot gather enough evidence to make a case does not mean you cannot possibly make the caregiving facility pay for any potential wrongdoing. the legal theories underlying criminal charge vs civil charge are totally different, as is the standard of proof, which is much lower in a civil case.
