Okay, so my buddy just got a '95 WS6 for $5,000. The car has 3" exhaust on stock manifolds, K&N intake, and a shift kit. At the track, it runs consistant 13.5s. Not too shabby for $5k.

I am currently driving/borrowing/whateveryouwanttocallit a 2004 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT which, in manual trim, runs 13.7 on the track. This Legacy has the manu-matic transmission; so, add about .75-1 second onto that track time.

Race seems pretty useless, right? Well, except for one big point: TRACTION. With the stock crappy tires, my buddy cannot get traction in first, halfway through second, and chirps in third. So, naturally, I said that we had to race from a stop. :)

Long, clear road about 9:30 pm and we line up. Even though, I know it isn't healthy, I stand on the gas while holding the brake, and my buddy kind of did the same. I got up to about 3k rpm and honked three times. We launched, and I thought he had it in reverse. I pulled at least 8 cars on him out of the hole, and I held it off through first, second, and then... *dack ka ka* "SHIT!" I, apparently, didn't press the "up shift" button hard enough, and I bounced off the limiter. I get into third, still ahead, and shift into fourth. I can see the headlights coming fast, and he passes me when I reach about 100mph; I would guess he is doing about 110-115mph. I flick the highbeams, and we slow down. I pull up next to him and tell him that I missed second. It's kind of funny saying that you missed a shift WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING AN AUTOMATIC!

Anyways, we line them up again, he does a nice ass burnout and pulls up next to me. I rev to 3k, honk three times, and we are off. This time I hit the shifts through all gears perfectly, and he still did a huge burnout off the line. I have a huge lead, but I can see him headlights getting bigger. When I get to about 120mph, he passes me at probably 130 or so.

When we get back to the house, he was like, "Dude, you kicked my ass in the 1/4, but I make up ground pretty damned fast."

I agreed and said that if we were on the track it would have been a totally different outcome. So, as it stands: AWD 4 cylinder - 1 RWD LT1 - 0

It was fun, but I got my fill of racing for a while. It's cool and all to do on the blue moon, but travelling 120mph on Louisiana roads isn't something I would do on even a monthly basis.

Not an extraordinary kill, but I thought it was kind of funny that a Japanese family sedan whooped up on a piece of "Detroit's finest."

I'd be careful with brake launches with auto trannies. I've known people who've blown trannies doing that.

A manual Subaru Legacy runs a 13.7 ? Those cars run low 15's at best. So i'm assuming this isn't a stock car.

All in all, good kill I guess.

Now that I think about it, it must be the wagon that runs the low 15's.

I know that brake launches on an auto are bad, but I figured that I had to do what I had to do. Heh. Like I said, I figured just once or twice wouldn't kill it if I only did it for a second. I have no intentions of doing it again, though.

As for the 13.7; that was my bad. It is a typo. The manual runs a 14.3. Look up the Legacy 2.5GT, though. 250hp, 250 ft lbs. of torque, AWD. 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and 1/4 in 14.2, both for the manual, respectively; both faster than a stock WRX, IIRC.

For a mainstream sedan, the Legacy is pretty damn quick.

The one thing I like about the Legacy is that it's 0-60 sprint rivals most sports cars. I'd be nice if it had the 1/4 mile to back it up. With a 5.2 sprint to 60, i'd expect 13's. I guess you can have your cake and eat it too.

He didn't catch up until 100+ mph??? Tell your friend to get some better tires!

I told him the same damned thing. Right now, he is looking at the Nitto555 tires, but he needs some time to make a bit more cash before he can get new tires.

Tell him Nitto's suck.

Even a set of basic Yokohama's would do as well, for much less money.

TireRack ranks the Nittos quite highly; do they really suck that much? I mean, have you had personal experience with them or are you just regurtitating something you have heard from someone else?

Ive only had the 555R Extreme Drag radials in 275/50/15 and they work great. Haven't tried the street tires yet but when I go up to a 275/40/17 I will most likely go with those.

the 555 DRs are great in the rain. i was scared to drive on them bc i thought they would be worse than regular street tires at first but they worked fine.

I thought WS6's were a lot faster than that (AWD launch advantage notwithstanding).

I figured a lightly-modified WS6 would be an easy high-12 second car.

Guess not.

Anyway, the new Legacies are t3h sechs.

id have to see that race to believe it. not saying it didn't happen would just be interesting to watch.

Well, after searching the car, I'm not believing it's a WS6, either. The guy (that my friend bought it from) said he debadged the car when he got it painted, and it does have the LT-1, but I do not think it is really a WS6. I mean, this is the same guy who had a Mustang with 20" chrome wheels, vinyls, and euro tail lights. The same guy that put a 6" tach light in an automatic Trans Am. It has the "Trans Am" badging on the doors, but it the wheels say "ABS" instead of "WS6".

I'd really like to see the title, but I keep forgetting about it.

The car does run 13.5s, though; which, I guess is quick for a lightly modded Trans Am?
