LONDON (AFP) - Religion should be outlawed because it lacks compassion and promotes hatred of homosexuals, gay pop star
Elton John said in an interview.

The singer was speaking in a special "gay edition" of The Observer newspaper's Music Monthly Magazine, where he shared his views on subjects ranging from being a music icon to Prime Minister
Tony Blair's stance on the
Iraq war.

At a time when religion is the subject of fierce debate in Britain over the right to wear the Muslim veil and other faith symbols, John complained there was a general lack of leadership from spiritual leaders.

"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred towards gay people. From my point of view, I would ban religion completely," he was quoted as saying.

"Organized religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate. The world is near escalating to World War Three and where are the leaders of each religion?

"Why aren't they having a conclave? Why aren't they coming together? I said this after 9/11 and people thought I was nuts. Instead of more violence why isn't there a meeting of religious leaders?" he said.

"It's like the peace movement in the Sixties. Musicians got through to people by getting out there and doing peace concerts but we don't seem to do them anymore.

"If John Lennon were alive today, he'd be leading it with a vengeance."

John complained that too many people were protesting online to take to the streets, highlighting the effectiveness of the February 2003 march against military action in Iraq that mobilized millions around the world.

With spiralling violence in Iraq, such opposition to Blair's backing of the United States had "come back to bite him on the ass," he added.

On homosexuality, the 59-year-old -- who sealed a civil partnership with his long-term partner, the Canadian film director David Furnish in December last year -- said he was happy to be viewed as the "acceptable face of gayness."

He also vowed to continue his fight for gay rights and
AIDS charities: "I can't just sit back; it's not in my nature anymore. I'm nearly 60 years old after all. I can't sit back and blindly ignore it and I won't."

i went to two of his concerts. That means I helped pay for him to stuff himself with food and his friend's dingaling as well.

religion wont go away. people feel they need it. perhaps if the members die off and their collection plates dwindle, you bet religion will take to the streets.

Rather ironic coming from someone seeking tolerance.

Big surprise to see who's so outspokenly against the gay guy.

the world has basically chucked the Bible....removed it from our schools

The Bible has NO place in school. Children are far too young and impressionable to be indoctrinated with ANY religion. They need to be allowed to develop their intelligence and determine what is best for themselves as they mature. I will not direct my son into ANY religion, yours or mine, but I will take issue with any adult who tries to steer him into any sort of system of belief, witchcraft included.

Elton's "righteous" cause? THE HOMOS!

YES, FOLKS, SAVING THE HOMOS WILL SAVE THE WORLD....YEAH, THAT'S IT!

Nowhere did I see "save the homos", but I did see (and agree with) the fact that Christians love to use the Bible as their means to cast judgment on others. Kinda like how YOU do it, Mark.

the world doesn't want Christ, they want a message of "peace and tolerance"

the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

mass murder on a scale imaginable only to those who joyously welcome it.

supernatural war waged specifically on those who have no interest in fighting any such war, but would rather kiss... the Wrong Person.

 :screwyou:

Judge not?

Judge not?

I'm assuming that's directed towards Mark, because I don't play by the Christian rules, nor have I ever insinuated that I do.

I apologize that my post was not better written.

In that post, I was pointing out that Christians should observe the line "Judge not, lest you will be judged," and not cast judgement on others. (Contrary to your post)

YET!

It is so written, "You shall judge a tree by its fruit"

The Path is indeed streight and narrow.

Very true.

Whats wrong with giving them the facts . . . if it's the truth?

but it's ok for them to be indoctrinated with darwinian fairy tales of "goo to you", which have absolutely NOTHING (and I mean zero) to do with empirical science, despite what the atheist high priests may claim to the contrary

interesting how that works.....materialism/humanism IS a religion

Funny, I don't remember any of my science classes doing "goo to you" (that made me chuckle, by the way).

Again, religion has no place in schools. Scientific fact, absolutely. Scientific theory, absolutely, as long as it is always referred to as theory.

I am against prayer in schools as well, because there is NO prayer that won't alienate someone. If you want prayer or religion in schools, then send your child to a religious school.

evolution, in terms of origins, is not a theory....it's a hypothesis, and not even a good one

all that should be taught is speciation, the only true science related to evolution

Yet, the Bible is just a hypothesis too, as none of it can be scientifically tested or proven. And you know it.
