Anyone on the forum play drums, in bands or anything else? I'm happy with my guitar playing ability after 14 years and am now going to try drums out. I've played a bunch before, to the point where I can do snare rolls, double kick rolls, and can keep a few fairly fast paced beats. I got my yearly bonus so decided to treat myself and buy a new Ludwig kit with all the bells and whistles. I was just wondering if any drummers had some tips to make the whole learning process go more smoothly.

I have too much of a white boy voice to pull that off.

I will learn some Quest Love beats and we can cover some Roots songs together if you like? :D

i used to play drums. something like 20 years ago. have thought about getting a cheep used set just to play around with but really don't have the extra money OR a place to put them. as for tips, i can't remember the bass pedal i used but it made for much faster pedal action than the one that came with it. to be a drummer, u have to be very coordinated. which means, being able to have both hands and both feet, each doing something different. and u also have to have rythm.

I'm a percussionist. I've been playing for about a decade, and i've been to All-State in California as well as South Carolina playing Snare. I played Quads(Tenors) for the most part though.

I also have "Perfect Pitch", i've played some Trumpet and Sax. I'm quite the muscian, although I don't practice that much anymore.

BTW, Ludwig does make some great sets. They're my favorite drum manufacturer. I've played on Yamaha, Premier, Pearl, and a couple of others, but Ludwig has by far been the best, especially with their Marching Drums.

Started playing saxomophone in elementary school. After middle school I switched to drumline, did that in marching band but still played sax in concert band.

Marched bass/snare for 7 years. Spent over two months of my life in official "band camps". Played at Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Vegas bowl. Played all across the US... california, arizona, nevada, colorado, wyoming, missouri, ohio, illinois, tennessee, maryland... A few others.

2004 Vegas bowl pics: http://animal.is-a-geek.com/vegas/index.html

Attached some old rose bowl pics... I'm in the back row, right next to the guard girls

Nice to see a fellow marching snare player Animal.

Do/Did you play traditional or matched grip on snare?

I ordered a Tama Iron Cobra double bass pedal when I got this set, so speed is definitely not going to be limited by pedal ability.

Traditional. That's the only way to play snare. :D

Drumcore>all, just watch the bluecoats back in the day and be ammazed and some of the shit. I shouldve played drums instead of the trombone in HS, but I played a lil bit of drums, well tried.

Through HS I was a Blue Devils fan. A few of our techs marched with 'em. Though SCV and the Cavaliers always put on a good show.
Some of my favorite shows:

'95 Blue Devils.... the kickass drum solo :D
'99 Troopers "Billy the Kid"
'92 Star of Indiana "American Variations"
2000 Boston Crusaders "Red"... that one still gives me goosebumps

Our band director was one of the best drummers, but I cant remember which one he was in though. I had a chance to go to the cadets and play bugle, but that was about the time I had a pipe put through my legs so yeha.

That shit is big around here, and if I could still march Id go to a core, man i know im spelling that wrong somehow. But right now I just help out during the football season and stuff like that. Its kinda fun, but I need to get a golf cart or something for all the running I do.

Some would beg to differ, and those are the drummers I despise :)
