I havent scanned for virus since 2003 which was the last time i built and formatted my comp. i have a 2005 Norton Anti virus somewhere but i dont feel like searching for it sicne its probably lost. My comps been acting really weird and slow lately and adaware picked up a quite few things. does anyone know of any good free virus scanners?

Avira Anti-Vir to block viruses.

Trend Micro Housecall to scan for them and destroy them. Does Spyware too.

Here is what I've learn to protect systems. There are a number of tool you can use. All are free and effective at keeping MOST things off your systems.

After you download and install them. I recomend makeing a folder in your start bar with all of them in it. If you wish, once a week, you click from top to bottom on each of the following programs to clean your system.

Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

If Windows Defender will not load on your system, you need to run the XP Service Pack 2 free update below
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...p/Default.mspx

Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)

Ad-Aware® Personal

BitDefender

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1

SpyBot-Search & Destroy 1.4

SpywareGuard 2.2

Housecall

RegClean

For all those I know the name of and cannot get off my system I use the following:

Symantec Threat Removal Tools Homepage
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hom...ools.list.html

For those people who use Internet Explorer, shoot yourself in the head! Get off your butt and get the following browser and plug-ins installed. Stop using the biggest security risk on the net (Internet Explorer). You can use Firefox with alot more protection and less risk to your system.

Firefox 1.5 Internet Browser
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Firefox > IE Tab 1.0.9
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/

Firefox > Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2410/

Common Plugins for Mozilla Firefox (Flash, Java, Quicktime, etc)
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/plugins/

Get those and you will sleep better at night imo.

I use Trend Micro through my school. Works great, and it's not a resource hog like Norton and McAfee.

I was talking to someone else who had that problem with Trend Micro. Odd because it works well for me.

I don't have that problem with Trend Micro. I can d'load from Torrent Spy, Ares, etc. at well over 100kb/s on average.
