Im looking at buying a 99-02 Grand Cherokee. The only one I have driven was an '02 4.0L... it was nice but I will probably hold out for a 4.7l .

Is there anything I should look for while test driving other than the regular engine noises, transmission slipping, etc?

Is the AWD better than 4WD? I dont care to take it offroad, just for it to be a good daily driver.

I nearly bought a 2000 JGC Limited 4.7L V8, and I missed it by a few days. Saw another one not too long ago, at the same lot for the same price, just a different color. Both were 10,500k, but had 120k miles.

Anyway, I test drove the former I spoke about above, and it was a pretty good ride. I couldn't find anything wrong with it, but a friend of mine just bought a rear end for his 99 4L JGC, which made me a little skeptical.

The car was at a shade tree lot on Howard Street, and all their decent cars had a lot of miles, hence the cheap prices.

If you're looking for this to be a daily driver, the gas mileage is gonna be horrific. 13-15 around town and not a chance of hitting 20 MPG on the open road. I'd get the 4WD model, if I had the choice. I'm guessing, but my senses tell me that the 4WD model would be more reliable, as it's not engaged full-time.

Im going to look for a while, probably end up with a cheapo 4.0 4WD... as long as it has a nice leather interior I dont really care. Pulled a 4,000lb car with the one I drove to PA so I know it will pull my CRX to the track.

I like this one... 99 limited 4.7l 4wd 81000 miles. $6,990. Im not a fan of the woodgrain... think ill hold out for a different exterior / interior color.

I can give you a lot of import cars that have condensation in their headlights.

It's a moisture issue. However, neither of my "American" cars have that problem ;)

I'd like to convert my Explorer to HID headlights, if it isn't too much. I did the conversion on my Prelude, it ended up being about $100 after it was all said and done. Looked pretty good too.

That looks pretty good. I'm sure you can pick up some headlights online someplace for cheap.

$7k is a good price. I paid $9.5k for my 02 Explorer. I should have looked at JGC's from that generation.

wrong.. its oxidation = faded of the plastic. or early aging of plastic... usually because its POS like Ford plastic.

I'll stand corrected if i'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's a moisture issue.

And believe me, it's not limited to any particular car manufacturer.

I worked at a jeep dealer for a while as a lot man and I ended up taking many long drives in all types of jeeps...I was not impressed with any of them. The build quality of the jeep products is horrible...The 4.7 seems to have constant problems esp. in the earlier years. The 4.0 is a better choice but the gas milage still sucks. On the Highway a 4.7 jeep gets maybe 18 mpg. The other engine choices, 5.2/5.9 are more reliable, but the gas milage is even worse. If I were looking for an suv I would prolly go 4 runner...just my .02 cents
