O 16581 72452 5 07-22-2005, 01:05 PM I posted this over on Rx7club and didn't really get any replies.
I'm looking for a sponsorship for my car (D series Honda Civic), be it full or discounts, i'm looking for things at the moment such as intercooler piping, fuel pump, intercooler, but i'll want many other things in the future.
Your end of the deal will be whatever size sticker(s) of your choice on my car (also on the parts you supply if you want), a banner ad on my website, a banner ad on my "car club" website and my cardomain site.
I plan regularly attending AutoX and my car is well known in town, your shop will be heard.

Oh wait........another bad habit. Never mind
Cosby 07-22-2005, 01:11 PM Why didn't you just ask? You've had my sticker on your car for a while. IM, pm, call or email me to setup the details. I'm about to put the haltech back in the fd and change the tranny in the fc so I may be busy for the rest of the day though.

Actually, the car with your sticker, i sold, i did sport it for almost a year though. I e-mailed you about another set, but you never mailed them.
Your shop seems a little bit more than "small", i didn't figure you'd be interested.
I'll be willing to put a large sticker down the side of my car so you get the most recognition to your site to make it as worthwhile as possible.
Cosby 07-22-2005, 01:29 PM sorry, emails get burried pretty quick :)
Supper 07-22-2005, 02:20 PM hmmm...
asking for sponsorship when it sounds like you literally have nothing to sell?
Because, face it, thats what sponsorship is, you are selling your proven performance and win record to these companies that in turn support you to put their name out there.
It isn't a wonder that you didn't get many responses out there in the first place. Especially when asking for full sponsorship when you only "plan" on attending Autocross this year.
If a person in the dirt bike world went to someone and asked for full sponsorship just because they "planned" on racing this next year, they would get laughed at. Laughed at loudly.
Most beginning sponsorship shit that I've ever had/been involved with started as very basic discounts, a lot of times only having things like paying for fuel to and from the competition, or providing one meal a weekend, or covering partial costs of the room or whatever.
I'm simply amazed that you would just come online and ask for full sponsorship. Thats usually something thats only offered after partial sponsorship for several seasons.
edit: and this is all speaking from personal experience in several other areas then cars.
another thing, some people won't sponsor you at all for the first season until you prove to them that you are willing to sacrifice things in your own life in pursuit of racing, prove to them that you are in it for the long haul to win, not just in it for free parts.
Cosby 07-22-2005, 02:24 PM It doesn't hurt to ask for full. I give him as well as around 5 other people and groups discounts on parts and it has proven to give me a fair amount of exposure for essentially a couple minutes of my time. As long as they are actually out there racing and doing well I don't mind but yes, you're right on with the typical sponsorship plans:

a lot of guys I know only sponsor people outside of their shop's cars in that manner.

It just worked for me. ;)
Chris agreed to give me discounts on products from this site. I say "plan" because the season may be over this year before i get all of the bugs worked out of my car. It will be raced in AutoX, that's what i built it for.
I have been e-mailing companies about sponsorships, two have shown interest, but the deals weren't that great, so i passed. What's the harm in asking? It seems to have paid off for me.
Supper 07-22-2005, 02:32 PM It doesn't hurt to ask for full.
sometimes it doesn't.
I've found that word travels though. A local person was asking some big name manufacturers for full sponsorship quite a few years ago, and had only talked to three saying "If you sponsor me then I can go to all of these competitions."
By the time he was half way down his list, word had already traveled ahead of him and he couldn't get past the secretaries.
The best bet is usually to buck up and do it as best you can for the first year or two, then go in and say "This is what I was capabale of the last few seasons on my own, with only myself providing the funds. If you were to help me out it would free up enough of my own money to allow me to go to all of these other events and help spread your name even further then I could doing it on my own."
oh well... it just really chaps my ass when people come out of the blue begging for full sponsorship when there have been people on the grind stone for years slogging through it alone without even a thought of asking for sponsorship until they had something to sell.
now... if barcode man here could provide some proof of past results and whatnot, thats something different. But on my end, not knowing any of these results, just sounds to me like some punk kid wanting free shit. If I were the owner of a company, it would be time to steer clear. I wouldn't want my name on anything that might wind up doing stupid shit and get a picture of the car on the local news thereby associating the name of my company with illegal shenanigans.

that was my point. I was talking mostly about full sponsorship, and it seems, as I said, you were never even considered for it.
Cosby 07-22-2005, 02:37 PM In the case of others that's probably true but I'm not one of the guys that has become completely detached from why I got into cars. I assure you I'm not in this for the money. I'm in it to help myself do more and help other people I meet do more with their cars. I mean, if I were a typical vendor I'd obviously not allow the nekkid section. I just sell enough to support my own vehicle.
jhammons01 07-22-2005, 02:39 PM Here's something that very few are gonna know. As a sponsered racer and as a Team Manager for a sponser (Redline bicycles 1990-1992) Something that a sponser is looking for is image. You could be the fastes rider in the country but if you were a butthead about you will have sponser issues. I always looked for potential team members that had an upbeat and clean image. somebody that always tried to help the little kids out. somebody that would always be freindly even on a bad race day. You can be cool and not act like some pinoy phaggot.
Supper 07-22-2005, 02:40 PM :D
you are the kind of person I wouldn't mind finding in the dirt bike world.
and if you think the car world is hard to get a sponsorship in, try and get one in the paintball world. back in the day we tried... thats where most of the sponsorship experience comes from.

exactly.
Can't say I've ever met someone who was fully sponsored that was an asshole.
And if they were an asshole, you usually heard that they had been dropped not too long afterwards.
O 16581 72452 5 07-22-2005, 02:44 PM I wasn't looking to specifically get a full sponsorship, but mentioned it if someone wanted to, i was expecting a discount if anything. It's not like i'm going to say "No, don't give me free shit".
By "deals not being that great", i meant i could get a similar product elsewhere for about the same price. This place wanted $700 for an exhaust manifold, there's no way i could talk them down to the $300 shipped i paid for mine, i risk it breaking, but i have access to a welder. Charge piping they wanted $215 (origionally $275), i can get it elsewhere with couplers for $150 insted of welded.

Exactly, i always try to be positive, if someone needs help with a car, i'll do it for free, if someone needs advice, i will give it to them. I constantly get people in town coming up to me asking a few questions about turbocharging their car, i'm always polite and help them, even give them my cell phone number if they have problems when they do it.
I haven't entered a competitive race yet, this is my first car i've had i will be able to race and i'm just now getting old enough to be into competitive racing. But in things such as sporting events, i always congradulate the winners, that's just my personality.
Now when people ask about turboing their cars, i will be able to point to the sticker on my car and say "Buy your stuff from him". :)
Get back to me ASAP on pricing for what i need, i have cash in hand.
everyone has to start somewhere i guess. unless you related to Force, Earnhardt, Andretti, Coughlin, etc...
