I was looking at this Audi earlier.... 90k miles on chassis, 75k on motor...

How well are these cars built? How long do the motors tend to last? What about the transmissions?

I've heard that with audis, bmws, etc.. you really can't do shit to them, every minor repair has to be done by the dealer.

Typically, what would a rebuilt engine + transmission cost on one of these if it were to fail?

It isn't AWD or turbo.

My A4 now has 150,000 on it. From my understanding, the timing belt needs to be replaced at 75k... I don't know if mine was or not, I bought it with 86000 on it. The only problem I've had was a ball joint popping out. Other than that, it's a solid little car.

they seem reliable

one of my friends at school as one. she has a 5spd a4 1.8T from '99 with 110k on it. no major issues. her exhaust makes a funky noise. probably a loose heatshield or something.
