Police say Tina Vazquez thought she could get a husband and children, with the other woman out of the way.

St. Louis, MO -- Detectives in Bonne Terre, Missouri say it's an assault unlike anything they've seen. A woman is accused of poisoning her friend so she could take her place as a mother and wife.

Tina Vazquez, 33, is charged with first degree assault. Detectives say her weapon was a chemical used to cure bacon and other meats.

Brian Hausler says his wife Angela was sick all winter with flu-like symptoms. Last Saturday, Brian found his wife unconscious on the living room floor, "She looked like she was dying. Her hands were black, her lips were black, her face was purple."

Angela wound up at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. She told doctors she took the antibiotic amoxicillin shortly before she collapsed.

Brian showed doctors one of the pills. "They took a look at it and the capsule said it was amoxicillin. But when they opened it they said the contents were not amoxicillin. That's when my wife thought back to Tina giving her two capsules of amoxicillin and saying it would make her feel better."

Tina Vazquez was an acquaintance of the Hauslers who occasionally babysat their three children. Vazquez was upset on Sunday. "I said, 'What's going on Tina?' She said, 'I did something bad'," according to Brian.

Detectives with the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department say Vazquez gave Angela Hausler a capsule of sodium nitrite, which is a chemical used to cure meat. Sodium nitrite is poisonous when in a powder form.

"She took the amoxicillin out of the capsule and substituted this substance and gave it to the victim," said Detective Jeff Black. The sodium nitrite deprived Angela's body of oxygen.

The sheriff says Vazquez talked about her motive. "She thought the kids and husband would have been better off with her. That's what she said," explained Sheriff Dan Bullock.

Brian says he still can't believe what happened. "To my knowledge I never led her on, but I felt like I did something to make her do what she did. I feel guilty I made victims of so many people. I don't know what to think."

Police say Brian Hausler knew nothing about Vazquez's plan. She is being held on a $50,000 bond. Doctors are expected to release Angela Hausler from the hospital Wednesday.
