easy, its called "fatigue failure"

The guy obvoiusly hadn't had any inspections done on his aircraft in a long time, that was a 100% preventable accident. Makes me glad I don't do aircraft inspections anymore.

Ohhh ok, I understand now. So, is it normal for BOTH to fall off at the same time?

...

If the wings were both experiencing the same fatigue levels, if both had similar loads at the time of failure, if the cracks that were present in the structure of the wings were of similar size... blah blah blah.

In other words, nothing in that situation is normal.

Its like anything else, the weak spot fails. It could be that both wings didn't go at the same time, the wing with the worst fatigue could have seperated first, then the added stress on the second wing could have caused it to seperate as well.

Its those questions that keep failure analysis labs in business.
