Simple question. I'm thinking about getting one and keeping it outside.

I here the freezing point of some beer is around the -4*C mark (25* F). The alcohol itself has a much much lower freezing point, somewhere around -110*C (-166*F). Something to consider too is if the ambient temps drop down below 0*F, you might not get a total freeze of the non-alcoholic content of the beer, only a partial. So the tap and whatever beer you have in the lines will freeze, but the contents of the keg would most likely have an icey "shell" with a very cold liquid "core." Of course, this assumes you let it sit in temps this cold for long enough to allow energy to transfer throughout all the material.

Vert8813B

Will the contents freeze if the keg stays out overnight when it may be around 26 F but then it gets above freezing during the day? I don't want to buy a shitload of bottles and don't want to buy a shitload of ice to keep it inside. :(

if you leave that thing outside tapped for a long period of time without a CO2 setup it will go flat.

dg123
11-25-2008, 12:47 PM
You may get some localized ice forming along the outer perimeter of the beer resulting in some CO2 separation, but I don't think the contents as a whole will freeze and go flat if it's left alone overnight. The pressure from the temperature increase during the day could be enough to dissolve the released CO2. I don't think you will have a problem. :peace:

Explain plz.

The tap seal for the keg, along with any valving associated with pumping beer from the keg and into a cup, are never 100% air tight. Think of it like your car tires; overtime, air is released and you have to pump up your tires again to maintain proper inflation numbers. Overnight won't be a problem, but if you let it sit for days/weeks/months without pumping CO2 back into the system, your beer will release it's dissolved CO2 content (like normal) and it will escape.

explain what? If you leave it tapped with basic tap and no C02 it will go flat. Taps are not perfectly sealed and do not keep the barrel pressurized all the time. How long do you plan on leaving it outside? And how big a barrel? Just buy a kegerator or better yet, make your own

Vert8813B
11-25-2008, 01:11 PM
don't most taps have that pump thing on them for the C02? I'm planning on keeping one tonight (maybe tomorrow) through next monday outside. Haven't got it yet, just considering it. Got family and guests coming.

I was thinking like a half keg.

keg...that is funny around here they are barrels. either 1/2 or 1/4 a 1/4 is about 90 12 oz glasses

Vert8813B
11-25-2008, 01:16 PM
yeah. A half keg or half barrel. Keg and barrel are synonymous; maybe depends on area like soda and pop. I've also heard half barrel keg, but that is redundant. I figure 180 should do it and then some for the amount of people and time.

If a full keg freezes solid, they can withstand the pressure? I mean, they won't bust open will they (like throwing a 12 oz can in the freezer)?

How many people are you expecting?

Depends on how long it is outside. Beer freezes, a whole bunch of beer can freeze just as easily depending on how cold it is and how long it is out there.

Including myself, 14 total. Some are staying longer than others though. Some are staying 4 days, some for 4 hours. I got 8 cases (24 bottles per case) of heineken, some wine, and some liquors. 8x24=192. Females drink less than the guys, plus they can have wine or the G-unit girls like my sister can have bacardi and cola.

I hope I don't have to fucking go out for anything. I'm the fucking baby of the family so I always get stuck doing it. Hence, why I tried to plan as best in advance as possible.

I was also wondering this myself. I think it can since the metal is much stronger than the metal in a can.

You'll probably be fine. American's can't drink much anyway.

Man Law??

What kind of beer are you looking to get in the keg? Depending on the style/quality of beer it *could* effect the taste and enjoyment of said beer...

Chilled is good, too chilled can be really bad (in the case of cask ales) and depending on how much the temp fluctuates from night lows to day highs you could confuse the taste of the beer even more....

If you have a garage I'd suggest dropping the keg in there, it will stay cool, but the change in temperature won't be as extreme as if it's just chillin on the front porch.

No man law. lol.

I was looking to get a keg of Blue Moon and a bunch of oranges to be honest. Belgian White of course. Maybe Honey Brown Lager if you have heard of it. Might be a primarily native North East thing like Genesee Cream Ale. Figured Blue Moon would be a good light body for everyone though.

I think lately it's mid to high 20s at night and 40s during the day (on average and Fahrenheit of course).

I don't have a garage. I do have a shed, but that's like 100 feet away. Would kind of suck making beer runs. :-p

mid 20's overnight = no frozen keg

don't even worry about it.

leave it close to the house or throw a blanket on it if you're really concerned.

mid 20's overnight /probably/ won't even freeze a keg of water solid.
