My thoughts are that back then it was hard to comprehend and explain things like the earth is billions of years old.

So instead of saying that God created the earth in a 6 billion years, there is a metaphor/verbage (for simplicity and to dumb it down) to the effect of 6 days creation....

Discuss.

God doesn't lie

and god doesn't speak to humanity.

so humanity lies when they say god spoke.

so the words of god are ALL lies.

99.999% of people get gods word WRONG.

SO GODS WORD IS A LIE.

since it is impossible to get accurate stats there is no such thing as a meaningful stat.

6000/1 damned/saved is a useful approximation, which 99.999 is on the same order as.

actually, 99.999 is way generous since it stipulates that there IS someone who got it 100% correct, which is in no way proven.

Noah and 7 others were saved out of millions, figure that one out

So everyone alive today - blacks, asians, whites, arabs, indians... are all a product of Noah's kids fucking each other after everyone else was killed, hrmm?

All cultures have creation myths. The Judeo-Christian culture is no exception. *shrug*

To answer the question in the title the answer is mostly yes. Science by definition only deals with natural phenomena, not the supernatural. They don't necessarily overlap.

Conflict exists because people try to explain natural events with supernatural causes (God of the gaps). If you don't how something works just throw your hands in the air and proclaim "goddidit".

honegod

which would be fine, since goddidit would equal "I don't know".

but goddidit DOESN'T equal "I don't know", because they MAKE STUFF UP and call it "revelations from the gods".

at which point science and religion inexorably diverge since science keeps both feet firmly on the ground, and sort'a shuffles along while religion goes flying off on wings of fancy.

considering the church made such a hoo-ha when whats-his-name first claimed that the earth orbited the sun, i just cant see how they can co-exist

unless your one of those individuals who claim that space is a lie and nasa/government/non christian liberals made it up

its pretty much proven the earth orbits the sun, so the church was wrong, what else could they be wrong about? evolution?

two different ways of looking at this thread

a way to get some data input from different sources so as to inprove my grasp of reality.

evidence to be used against me in my trial for heresy.

To say nothing of the fact that 2 of each kind of animal fit on a boat, and have migrated hundreds of thousands of miles over land and sea, and completely repopulated the earth, in less that 5000 years.

God speaks through His Word
wtf That is the fallacy of circular arguement (for the latter post). I think both can co-exist, depending on how open-minded one is. The real question is not is does God exist, but how does religion effect how one behaves and thinks.

ftw = ???

Flies The Wig ?
Freaks The Whities ?
Facilitates True Wholesomness ?
Free The Whales ?

openmindedness is a sin, where error is punishable

religion starts at certainty and works backward from there.

reasonable, I note that scientists who are also christian are able to do actual science AS LONG AS THEIR RELIGION IS SILENT ABOUT THE TOPIC AT HAND.

as soon as the religion starts being involved, scientific objectivity flies out the window, defenestrated by religious positivism.

note, by "religious positivism" I mean the quality of believing with certainty what the religion says without needing supporting evidence, Faith.

5000 years is a very long time

at least, in the mind of anyone who has not been poisoned with 'millions of yeras' brainwashing

I would cheerfully undergo 5000 yeras' of the worst gods created hell could throw at me if doing so could keep my daughter out of hell for eternity, which is a much longer time than mere 'millions of yeras'.

and slightly more than jesus had to invest on the cross, to fail to eliminate eternal hell entirely for everybody.

it gets more interesting :D

compare the tortures of crucifixion to Hell.

crucifixion is ugly, but hell is designed by the creator of the nervous system as the ultimate possible torture.

no comparason there.

crucifixion lasts maybe a couple of days, and then utterly stops.

eternal, MUCH longer than multiplied millions of years, NEVER ends, or lessens in any way.

do we need a 'jesus is gay' thread to explore this further ?
