jdawg101 04-04-2008, 05:11 PM Before I start, I just want to say that I am not Christian, nor any of its denominations. I am Jewish.
My friend Zach plays drums and his brother Matt plays guitar. They came over to my house a few weeks ago so we could jam. The song I picked out was "Sad But True" by Metallica. I picked this song because it is a good song to start out on, but I mostly picked it because their parents are very religous, and that song contains no swearing, no satanistic vibes, nothing that I could find in it was offensive. In fact, we only praticed the first 20 seconds.
I saw Matt a few days ago, and when I asked him about setting up a time for he and his brother to come over, he said that they could only play jazz and blues. When I asked him why, he said that he wasn't sure, but he thought it was either because his dad dosen't like rock, or because their pastor said that they couldn't play rock.
I'm not familiar with religous views on music, but I would guess that the lyrics are what makes a song morally wrong. That, and sexy dancing. I think that Zach's family is either Presbyterian or Pentecostal. Does anyone why a Pastor would say that?
I think that parents should decide how to parent their kids, not let other people tell them how to do it. But that's just my opinion.
Comments?
Cosby 04-04-2008, 05:27 PM I agree with you. It sounds like you're dealing with BAPTISTS!
jdawg101 04-04-2008, 05:44 PM 99% of Metallica listeners don't realize it, but that song is actually Hetfield's reflections on demonic possession/oppression (same with "Until It Sleeps"), not alcoholism, and there are several songs like it in his catalog...in fact he used to nick-name the band "Satanica"...he was joking around of course, but there is a some truth to it
note the lyrics:
Hey, I'm your life, I'm the one who takes you there
Hey, I'm your life, I'm the one who cares
You, you're my mask, you're my cover, my shelter
You, you're my mask, you're the one who's blamed
Do, do my work, do my dirty work, scapegoat
Do, do my deeds, for you're the one who's shamed
Hey, I'm your life, I'm the one who took you here
Hey, I'm your life, and I no longer care
I'm your truth, telling lies, I'm your reasoned alibis
I'm inside open your eyes....I'm you...sad but true
Interesting.
I think, however, that his parents wouldn't know that just by listening to the lyrics. You would have to know Metallica to some extent to guess that.
The stupid thing is that we don't even have anyone to sing, even if we could do the whole song.
At least we aren't doing politically charged songs like Master or One.
jdawg101 04-04-2008, 05:51 PM parents need to know when to draw the line with discipline/rules: you can't mandate a child's thoughts, the kid has to make some bad decisions and learn from them, it's part of growing up
So very true. I actually read in a book that even though parents hate the song "Fade to Black" which is about suicide, apparently a fan once walked up to Hetfield and said of the song, "Oh man I love that song. It saved my life."
My parents are very open with me about drugs, sex, and all of the stupid shit that people do. They tell me about it so that I actually know not only that it is wrong, but why it is wrong. There is nothing wrong with music. For the record, I don't consider any rap after about 1988 music.
My dad has often said that when he was at a party in college, if you saw a girl passed out drunk on the floor, 99% of the time she was Catholic. My mom has a friend that raises her kids really strictly, and I mean really. Like they can't even read Harry Potter. And the older one is 17.
Ouch.
jdawg101 04-04-2008, 05:52 PM agree 100%...the average listener doesn't have the slightest clue what he's driving at
try "Battery" haha
How about "Hand of Doom?"
What you gonna do?
Time's caught up with you
Now you wait your turn
You know there's no return
Rock stars love their heroin
Take your written rules
You join the other fools
Turn to something new
Now it's killing you
First it was the bomb
Vietnam napalm
Disillusioning
You push the needle in
Rock Stars love their heroin

I think I disagree with you. The way the line is worded that you point out doesn't say something is literally inside.
TJGoSurf 04-04-2008, 06:02 PM So Hetfield is admitting he's the devil? Get him.
Who wrote that book, "Whats wrong with America?" I expected it to be one word book saying, "Christians." They fuck up everything, sodom and gomora, vegas, roman empire, middle east, the list doesnt end. I even heard they're the reason they are cutting oil production.
jdawg101 04-04-2008, 06:03 PM I hate the fact that so many people think that rock and/or metal is demonic, and that the artists are Satanists. Does anyone actually know whether or not Robert Johnson actually signed a contract in blood with the devil? No. But rock musicians will be forever haunted by that because there is a possibility that he did it. Maybe he said that because he felt like he did? I don't know. For all I know, he got completely blistered one night and thought he saw the devil.
On a different note- who had more satanic lyrics - Zepplin or Sabbath? Sabbath. Who was the one that was involved in the occult - Page or Iommi?
Page. Go figure.

This reminds me a bit of Creed. A lot of people thought that they were a Jesus band, even though they denied it. Look at these lyrics:
Hello my friend, we meet again
It's been awhile, where should we begin?
Feels like forever
Within my heart are memories
Of perfect love that you gave to me
Oh, I remember
When you are with me, I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice
We've seen our share of ups and downs
Oh how quickly life can turn around
In an instant
It feels so good to reunite
Within yourself and within your mind
Let's find peace there
When you are with me, I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice
I just want to say hello again
I just want to say hello again
When you are with me I'm free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
Cause when you are with me I am free
I'm careless, I believe
Above all the others we'll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice, My sacrifice
I just want to say hello again
I just want to say hello again
My sacrifice.
I think that he is singing to some ex-girlfriend or something, but a lot of people think that this song is about Jesus. It fits, but I don't think so.
czarofzar 04-04-2008, 07:06 PM Can religon really dictate what music you can listen to? Of course they can.
If you attend their church, you are basically relying on them to hone your soul into a JEsus loving machine.
In other words, if you want to learn how to box, you will go to these box clubs and listen to what the journyman tells you to do. So if he tells you, no fucking while training cuz itll weaken the legs, well you better do what he tells you to do if you wish to be trained in his fashion. If you disagree, then go some where else.

Yeah, I know that they don't actually have to, but what really pisses me off is that the parents went to the pastor instead of figuring it out themselves. To me, that is a decision that the parents should make.
I can't really understand why the pastor would say that they can't play rock. Does anyone else have any ideas?
My last problem is that these parents have kids that are musicians. Musicians should be able to explore any type of music that they choose. I can understand why the parents might not let them listen to profane stuff, but there is so much rock that isn't.
Tofuball 04-04-2008, 09:19 PM Much of the "Christain music" I hear these days is very secular/pop sounding, and I don't care for it
Word.
whether Scott Stapp was or is truly a Christian is anyone's guess, I think he's a "spiritual seeker" who dabbled in Christian faith...I like some of Creed's stuff, but most of it is kind of tedious
One is their only good song.
1revnrex 04-04-2008, 11:23 PM Yah so Scott Stapp and his Jesus Christ Pose sucks. That guy used his spiritual sounding music to bleed money from the sheep.
Shitty video but a great song|:

czarofzar 06-13-2008, 09:25 PM It seems like music is essential for church worship. I wonder why that is?
czarofzar 06-14-2008, 05:02 PM But its part of the diet served by churches worldwide. Is it the music that conditions/preps the mind to allow non logic messages to adhere?
