I have an assload of music and movies on my hard drive, and want to free up some space. So I bought a 50 pack of DVD-Rs at Wally World. Can I move my music files over as data and use the full 4.7 GB of space on a DVD-R?

Well, I tried to do it by right clicking the file and doing "send to", but it didn't work. What am I doing wrong?

use a DVD burning software such as NERO or SONIC

Nero is the best software ever made... I've used it for about 6 years now and have tried different things at others houses/school/work.. nero is by farrrrrrr superior to all.

+1 For Nero, I use it to burn music video cds all the time. Its able to do just about anything you could want, and it's super easy to use. I got it on Limewire.

avi files are typically compressed with popular codecs such as divx, 3ivx, etc. MOST dvd players do NOT play them. However, they are starting to become popular. You can however convert the avi files to vcd, svcd, or my newest favorite KVCD.

Now if you want to burn the avi files as an iso cd just to use as data as you stated above make sure you tell nero that and not to burn as a video cd or svcd.

Man, I'm Nero inept... I can't get it to do shit. I can't burn data, I can't burn DVD MP3s, anything. WTF?

just use "mkisofs" or "cdrecord".
why fuck around with payware that sucks when you could use something free that works better?

You don't even need a mouse to use it!

I'm using the Nero that came with the computer, which came with a DVD burner... You'd think it would all just work. I have been trying to use Nero StartSmart.

OK, I can't get it to burn DVDs for anything. It says DVD R/RW on the front of the motherfucking drive, so what's the goddamn problem?

Ok, I have Nero 6.6, so hopefully your version is close enough that this will make sense.

Instead of using Nero SmartStart, go to the program group and start 'Nero Burning Rom.' You'll get this screen:
http://theforumlounge.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1694&stc=1&d=1149777838

From there you can choose what type of disc you want. In your case you want to make sure that DVD is selected in the drop down box on the upper left corner and DVD-ROM(iso) is highlighted just underneath that. From there you can simply click 'New.' You'll then get this screen:
http://theforumlounge.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1695&stc=1&d=1149778019

From there you can drag and drop the files you want onto the disc and then click on the burn button and you're all set.

Hope that helps.

lol. sorry, I just had to. :)

Are you able to burn regular CD-R's?

Are you getting any kind of error messages? What are they? etc. Is there anything that prevents you from walking through the entire process?

Basically, you should be able to add files to a list that will be burned onto the DVD. After you are done adding files, you should see a "finished", "continue", or "next" button. Click it. This should bring up a screen with a few more options including "burn speed" and the like. You should now see a button titled "start", "start burning", "burn", or something similar. Click it. As soon as it is done burning it will eject the DVD.

Let us know dude.

Are you able to burn regular CD-R's?

Yep. I was able to successfully burn an MP3 format CD-R using Nero. Usually, I just burn music CDs using Windows Media Player.

Are you getting any kind of error messages? What are they?

Yep. Illegal disc.

I just use hard drives. I backed up my iBook backup last night, I've decided every 2-3wks I'ma do a full backup. Much easier to just make an image and save it to a drive, letting it run unattended for an hour or two, than to swap out disks every 10mins or whatever.
