If you don't mind, please check over some of the stuff in the archive for accuracy. I'm an FD guy myself so some of this stuff might be wrong :)

The budget rebuild thread, the corner seal PLUGS are not needed, wont make a difference. That'll shave some money off.

Also if you get the RA o-ring kit and use RTV for gaskets, you don't need the $140 gasket set, you can do it for $40 (I think) for the o-rings, plus it comes with the front/rear main seal so knock those off the list as well, and it comes with the oil seal rings, no need for the atkins viton ones. And for those that really want the corner plugs, it comes with that too you just have to cut them to length.

It can be done for cheaper, lets see...

- RA apex seals/springs $182 here (http://rotaryaviation.com/2_mm_apex_seals.htm)
- RA o-ring kit $153 here (http://rotaryaviation.com/o-ring_kits.htm)
- Side seal springs $19.08 here (http://mazdatrix.com/b3.htm)
- FD corner seal springs $27 here (http://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=16714&cat=0&page=1)
- Thermal Pellet $8.94 here (http://mazdatrix.com/b5.htm)
- Various RTV/Hylomar/Etc. $15 max?

Total = $405.02 not including shipping.

As always check everything to be within spec, all sizes, wear, clearances. I've actually heard of some people reusing their side seal springs... though I REALLY don't suggest it.

The fuck they aren't.

I did a compression test and a face on each rotor was dead. This didn't make sense until i took my engine apart and 4 of those plugs were missing, this caused my apex seal springs to bend.

No, you're wrong. Kevin Landers has proved it time and time again that the plugs do not make a difference in compression

When you do a rebuild, run it hard, and your apex seal springs bend, maybe you won't tell others to cut corners.

I'm posting what i've proven the long term effects of leaving those plugs out caused, it caused a bent apex seal spring in both places the plugs were missing, they were missing on each side of two apex seals.

Got any proof? You positive thats the cause? Because Kevin Landers has proven this makes no difference in short and long term in any way.

Either way, the list I gave above includes the fucking corner plugs, so stop whining.

I'll update it

What more proof is needed? The damage to my engine was done where the plugs were missing, two seals with them missing, two damaged springs, the others were perfect.

What are you proposing the purpose of the plugs to be? To me they make it a little easier to put together and I assume the provide a sort of guide for the seal. I use the seals without the plugs rather than the oem ones personally. I don't see how the lack of the plugs could damage the spring. Do you have any pictures?

I dunno, like I said it's been proven LONG TERM to be fine by Kevin. What about the fact that half of the engines out there that are torn down have deteriorated corner seal plugs just from normal use? And the apex seal springs were still perfectly fine upon disassembly?

I agree, the only thing I've found from building rotaries with the corner seal plugs is that it makes the apex seal/corner piece installation easier and helps hold them in place during the engine assembly.

Me, I use solid corner seals now, but that's for porting reasons. I know enough people that run no corner seal plugs, you are the FIRST person I've ever heard of proposing something bad happened because of it.

Hey COsborne, I tried PMing you but your box was full I guess? Anyways here -

I made a typo, in the engine rebuild info:

"you can do it for $40 (I think)"

Change 40 to 153

The other corner seals were intact and fine, no signs of "deterioration", it appeared these plugs in my engine kept the seals from being compressed too much. Maybe they did something else in other engines? Mine was a GSL-SE. The other seals had far less travel because of these seals/plugs.

Didn't GSL-SE's have 3mm apex seals? I can't remember, I thought they did. I'm talking later style 13b's with 2mm stock seals.

I really doubt that'd change anything much, but maybe...

I'm not sure, maybe we're both right, but i wouldn't risk building an engine and leave something out. I've learned the hard way, when i cut a corner to save money, i have to spend what i spent cutting the corner, then spend to do it the right way anyway.
