Waste Research and Reclamation Fire
A large-scale fire broke out at Waste Research and Reclamation on the south side of Eau Claire around six o'clock this morning. Firefighters say it was caused when a boiler exploded.
Firefighters say they have evacuated a three-fourths of a mile radius around the building, which is affecting both homes and businesses. That mandatory evacuation remains in effect.
At 11:00 a.m., the city of Eau Claire called for a voluntary evacuation for residents living in the area between Rudolph Road and Highway 93 north of I-94. That voluntary evacuation has been canceled and residents can return to their homes.
I-94 between exits 59 and 70 has been reopened to traffic, but Hwy 93 between Golf Road and Eau Claire County II remains closed.
According to the EPA, part of the facility’s business is the reclamation and recycling of hazardous liquid wastes.
According to fire deputies, there are no known injuries from the fire.
The Township fire department says the crews will likely be on the scene until late Friday evening and could possibly go into Saturday morning.
The Eau Claire Fire Department is monitoring air quality for approximately 300 chemicals. The monitoring indicates there is no presence of harmful chemicals from the fire.
The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is still warning people with respiratory problems to stay inside.
No injuries have been reported.
