Supper 01-29-2009, 10:04 PM First of all, I am by no means a retard when it comes to cold weather. You just get acclimated to a certain temperature range when exposed to it repeatedly.
It used to be that I considered "Cold Weather Gear" nothing more then UnderArmour Coldgear under a pair of carhartts with a hoodie and an FR Carhartt coat. That will keep you warm down to -20° or so (chill or ambient).
Now, today was an experiment day just because I felt like it. And I fucking froze my ass off. It was -30° ambient with chill in the -40's to -50's. Wore underarmour CG base layer, carhartt FR pants/button up shirt, down jacket, issued arctic bibs and parka.
First time in years my hands have been so cold that they hurt.
Two days ago in -60 I was toasty warm, almost sweating, and that was without the down jacket. But, I had a heavy weight silk base layer, with a mid weight wool insulating layer, carhartt pants, carhartt button up shirt, issued arctic gear (bibs and parka).
Next experiment will be with UA CG as the base and a fleece layer as the insulating layer, will bypass the Carhartt FR layer as that is just redundant with the issued arctic gear being FR.
As for gloves, most gloves suck ass. it doesn't matter how insulated they are, you're hands get cold. You can't do the work wearing heavy gloves due to loss of dexterity, same goes for mittens. Liner gloves, hand warmers, and mid weight "arctic" gloves still don't keep your hands that warm.
Anyway, here is a little shot of what it looks like up here:

95whitepep 01-29-2009, 11:03 PM Damn....that 'long' of day I'd probably go crazy......
As for the cold, you're probably spending all of your money on things to keep you warm.
The older I get the less cold I want to be.
czarofzar 01-29-2009, 11:13 PM do they allow pussy there? anyway, i was wondering why there was a posted speed limit of 35 fucking miles per hours on a stretch of flat ass road?
wotnartd 01-29-2009, 11:21 PM My hands get cold way easy, I hate it. They turn white. Not cool.
Supper 01-29-2009, 11:22 PM I don't spend hardly any of my money on things to keep me warm, the biggest money items (couple thousand just in bibs/parka) were purchased by the company.
And czar, the only thing the local general store sells out of on a regular basis is condoms. The maximum speed limit on up here is 45mph, and you will get blacklisted if you speed...
czarofzar 01-29-2009, 11:24 PM one word comes to mind: bleak
sup, you are one tough dude

Why thank you sir. I really feel almost at home up here. First time in a long time I have enjoyed the location more then the work.
Supper 01-29-2009, 11:32 PM or polar bears
That is a very, very real threat up here. About half way out the causeway to Endicott there is a huge sign that says "Caution: Entering high polar bear activity area. Be away of surroundings and repeat all sightings immediately."
Every day the operator says "Especially watch out for those snow drifts that are moving and have black noses."
Haven't ran into one yet, guess they are still out on the ice pack hunting seals. Will be taking many pictures once spring hits and they move back to the tundra.
BTW YZF, there are quite a few very fuckable ladies up here and 30:1 is a very conservative estimate. I would guess closer to 60:1
czarofzar 01-29-2009, 11:39 PM i would love to visit. would you host a TFL BBQ there? hehe i know its cold.
Supper 01-29-2009, 11:41 PM no civilian access past the check point, and something like $300/night in the only tourist hotel in town.
Tofuball 01-30-2009, 06:49 AM Pix/Description of issued arctic bibs and parka?
Supper 01-30-2009, 09:22 PM so what exactly to you do every day, or is this a classified operation? ha
Just work on normal oilfield stuff, its just that BP doesn't allow non-employee's on lease. You have to have an access badge to get past the checkpoint.

Supper 01-31-2009, 11:33 PM My pleasure.
I'll be getting a bunch more pics when it comes to next hitch, pulling a 5 weeker so will need something to keep myself occupied...
2ndGen.Rocket 02-01-2009, 12:04 AM You're nuts man. Fuuuuuuck that.
Steel 02-01-2009, 01:18 AM Dont your eyeballs get cold?
Supper 02-01-2009, 02:03 PM Your eyelids start to freeze shut after a while. Usually, when dressed correctly, thats your indicator that you need to go in for a warm up break.
