What components have an effect on cold idle ability?

Mainly the coolent temp sensor. If you are having cold idle or start up problems I would check the sensor to make sure its working correctly. Its the sensor in the back of the waterpump housing, not the one in the block.

There is the thermowax in the main throttle body that can go bad and if that is not functioning properly that combined with poor compression motor can lead to hard cold start up as it controls the throttle plates as to give more gas when cold. The manual also shows the air thermosensor as playing a role in how your car warms up and starts. Also as MrBob has stated water temp sensors can also play a apart but unless the tabs on them are physically broken they are fairly foolproof.
