BATMAN 08-08-2005, 12:35 PM Just brainstorming here:
I'm a huge advocate of the constitution, but I saw something yesterday that really got me thinking. Let me preface by saying, I've known what I'm about to say has been happening a long time, but I never took it back to the creation of our nation before yesterday.
I was watching C-SPAN and they were talking about a new gun bill. Now, I'm completely against gun control, but this particular bill had a line item that said that if someone is retarded and accidentally shoots themself, they can't sue the manufacturer. To me, that makes a lot of freakin' sense. Our nation is overrun with frivilous lawsuits. But this democrat senator from CT named Chris Dodd was arguing against that restriction. I was apalled. Why on Earth would someone WANT to give people a way to make easy money when the fault isn't the manufacturer's at all (remember, it isn't for if the gun is poorly manufactured and hurts someone, it's about if someone shoots themself accidentally and it's their own fault)? Are the people in CT that he represents really for fivilous lawsuits?
A friend said "I bet he gets a lot of campaign contributions from lawyers." Curious, we look it up and came across this:
http://www.opensecrets.org/politici...0581&cycle=2000
Go about 2/3's the way and you'll see this: Lawyers & Lobbyists: $703,664
Wow. Additionally, he received over 4 million dollars in contributions total. That is ONE senator. There are another 534 congressmen up there, as well as state govenors, state congressmen, electorates... and ONE DUDE GOT THAT MUCH!
But I digress, the point is the man isn't representing the people in CT, he's representing people who gave him money, and most of those people probably aren't even in his state. And of course, this has been going on for a long time. And it's no surprise either.
Think about it, it is in a industry/corporation's best interest to help politicians gain more power so that the politicians can help them out. We, as citizens, are the only ones who get a raw deal. The corporations get legislation passed to help them out (pharmaceutical companies want cheap recreational drugs to stay illegal, lawyers want to be able to sue more people, insurance companies want more people sued so their rates can increase, etc...). The politicians get more power over the people (with all the legislation that the corporations help them pass).
Sadly, this is an eventuality of our original system. There's nothing that pits the two offending parties (corporations and politicians) against each other, therefore it'll always come to them helping each other out. We, the people, end up getting brainwashed by their propaganda that always ends in them getting what they want, and us getting screwed.
I know there is no perfect government, but this is a big problem in my opinion. The far lefties are right, corperations are evil, they're just too crazy on how to deal with them. I don't want to give up the free market ideal or our civil liberty ideal just to make sure corporations don't corrupt the government, because if we do, it's our government's own power that corrupts them.
Is there no solution?
Discuss and debate
AmishBoy 08-08-2005, 01:03 PM Yeah it sucks. Politicians only agenda seems to be staying in office.
BATMAN for president in 08!
As far as the right to bear arms and other sections of our constitution, it is interpreted way too liberally today in regards to what it was intended for. The constitution was designed to protect and reserve America for the honest working citizens. The constitution and other branches of the judicial system are now being interpreted to do the exact opposite. People exploit the law to excuse their own stupidity, laziness and inabilities.
Gun Control. Im sure a large percentage of firearms used in crime are used by previously convicted felons that arent supposed to have firearms anyway. Nevertheless, if someone is going to use a gun for a crime, do you think they'll hesistate obtaining or using one illegally? No, they wont, the criminals will always find ways to get guns. Gun control will hurt the average citizen that has no intentions to use firearms for a crime, and take their right to protection.
Yes, politicians are bought. What can we do? Nothing. They can change laws, we cant. Even if we vote them into office for the sole purpose of "fixing" the problem, do you think they're going to vote for something that would hurt them personally? All politicans love money and ALL use their office and position for personal gain to some extent. There are restrictions on most types of donations, you can only receive a maximum amount from one person/party and you have to have a minimum number of contributors. Well, obviously, the restrictions arent good enough, or politicians wouldnt be bought so easily.
As far as this particular idiot, you said the keyword: democrat.
As long as our country stands for being liberal, things will only get worse, because stupidity is accepted.

cool3865 08-08-2005, 07:54 PM this world just needs a nuclear winter
maniacmikey 08-08-2005, 08:26 PM We should all get together and have a corn dog.
RoadRaceJosh 08-08-2005, 09:13 PM Well, it all comes down to money. Very agressive campaign finance reform would be a good start. If the flow of money from lawyers, lobbyists and big business is halted then most all the peddling of influence stops.
Our constitution was written to lay out the form of our government. The Bill of Rights was intended to staunch the abuses of power present in other countries. This is why we have seperation of church and state, prohibitions on unusual punishment, the right to bear arms, etc. The constitution and it's ammendments were not meant to enforce common sense. Common sense is unenforceable and one way in which man is not created equal. Even William Shakespeare wrote in Henry VI "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers". Again, it's the flow of money. Cut off the flow of money from lawyers to the politicians and the problem doesn't cease, but is greatly reduced.

politics is the reality of people trying to live together in one society.
the fact of the matter is all systems of government are inherently flawed because people are inherently flawed.
