can anyone explain the significance of the mighty army discussed in the first part of the passage?


Judgment, pure and simple.

Just like the wave of the Flood (local or not!), how can Gods judgment be stopped? Who could stop a tidal wave of that proportion? Same with his judgment, it is a wave that cannot be stopped, held back, diverted, or quelled. It is divine in purpose and direction.

I'm no bible scholar. I wonder if the Lord's Army is made up of his Saints or of his Angels. I don't see how they could be the Saints unless the resurrection has occurred, otherwise they wouldn't have bodies. Anyway, this will be a horrific time for those who oppose God. It sounds as though the whole earth will be in fear:

you're "not there yet"? please clarify...none of us have achieved the promise of glorification, of course, but we have bold confidence in Christ

It's not about glorification. It's a picture back to the OT about the Israelites wandering in the wilderness but in the light of the relationship of the NT life. Among the elect today, as has been since the inception of the church, many are still wandering so to speak and have not entered into the Lord's rest. Many of the elect are saved yet not really living in the life they've been saved for. Did God save the Israelites from the Egyptians? For sure. Did they all make it into the promised land? Nope. God has and will save his elect but that does not mean they are really living where they should be.
