FSURedFD 02-22-2006, 01:54 AM Before I say anything, basically I think Meddle shouldn't even be allowed to view this thread.
Now then, I've been feeling really shitty today because of something that happend earlier to me.
So I'm driving my Touareg home from class when just as I'm getting near my Apt I see a red FD go by me. Now, Rx-7s are rare in Tallahasse as it is, so to see an FD is amazing. Just as it goes by in the opposite direction, I see that he pulls into the Shell station right by my place. I decide I'm gonna turn around and get to know the guy, since I don't really know any Tallahassee 7 owners personally.
I flip and U and pull in, about to park and get out when I come around the corner and see the driver filling up. The driver instantly fits my image of Ghetto Black Guy. Orange shirt, white basketball shorts, flip-flops w/ socks. Medium length braided hair...Basically looks like a mean Sanka from Cool Runnings:
(2nd from left)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/northyorkshire/students/diaries/henry/images/270/cool_runnings_270.jpg
I get off the brakes and drive out of the station. Instantly I feel like the biggest asshole ever. Everyone has their stereotypes and opinions but I have never acted on them out of pure instinct like that.
It's not like the car was on 20 inch spinners. It was a nice lowered VR car with 17in. 5zigen F10s. I'm sure I would have walked over and been like "I'm an FD owner too! Nice car man." and he would have totally been open to conversation with me. It's not like just anybody buys Rx-7s.The people who do buy it just for looks usually get rid of it within a month.
Now I feel like the biggest ass because I missed out on missing a local 7 owner up here because of my own prejudices. It's not neccessarily because he was black, but because I considered him "Ghetto Black".
I don't really know how to feel now, but wish I didn't have that innate feeling inside me that controlled me. What's the best way to deal with this?
You guys ever have any kind of similar situations?
[Here comes Meddle with some comment about "Ya I came upon a Black Guy once, I (shot/lynched/burned/stabbed/drowned) him."]
DarkAngelKamui 02-22-2006, 07:40 AM Yeah, it happens every now and then, at least in my case...
Sometimes I've even caught people in the act of hesitating to talk to me... Two guys saw me buy a Led Zeppelin CD once and started talking amongst themselves about how surprised they were to see a black guy with some good taste in music... I kinda looked over at em to see who said it, but they clammed up and looked away before I could....
There was that time where a "pimped" out looking asian guy in a M3 pulled into a gas station to talk to me about my MX-5, but that's a different story... lol
Guess it just depends on your upbringing and habits.... As much as I'd like it to be a perfect world, people just don't up and talk to strangers unless they're totally comfortable or the person they want to talk to looks harmless....
$100T2 02-22-2006, 08:56 AM I know what you mean... The only other 7 around here is owned by a black guy with dreads... At first I was like, eh, but then I actually talked to him, and he's a pretty nice guy.
BATMAN 02-22-2006, 10:07 AM FSURedFD,
Don't be ashamed of ur feelings.
The force is strong in u and the reason why u behaved the way u did is that u sensed a disturbance in the force.
Yoda once said, "Safe be u wobble away from danger better than erecting light saber."

This coming from a guy who probably lives in a neighborhood with 1% black people within a 5 mile radius....
meddle 02-22-2006, 10:49 AM Omg Im Viewing Your Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DarkAngelKamui 02-22-2006, 10:51 AM Y'know, if anything I would have asked Batty not to post, rather then Meddle....
Meddle may say racist things, but Batty's more prone to believing what comes out of his mouth.... :D
meddle 02-22-2006, 10:57 AM I call BS on this thread. It's pretty common knowledge that black people don't drive FD's. Duh.

I know of at least 2 that do in my area....
One I work with, and one has been by my house quite a few times to obtain his MegaSquirt ECU...
Both are fairly serious about their tuning work... :D

Well that was a joke. Da negros gotsta da FD's hurr too....
vrooom305 02-22-2006, 01:36 PM About two days ago I saw a black guy driving a Saleen Mustang with 20's. Everything in the car looked great. Hell, he might have deserved such a fine vehicle. But it was those 20 inch rims that just made me think that "he just had to express his niggarness, huh"
Also a couple of times driving on I-5 I saw a Mustang, there's got to be some connection here, with ~14-15 dayton rims that stuck out farther than the fender. And I thought "...Mexican..."
aznpoopy 02-22-2006, 01:53 PM hell everytime i walk around in newark i get that feeling.
some of the undergrads look like they might as well be drug dealers.
on the other hand, some of the well dressed preppy asian fags i knew when i was an undergrad actually WERE drug dealers.
so shake it off and try to get over yourself next time. at least you feel bad about it. that's a step in the right direction.
FSURedFD 02-22-2006, 02:38 PM Hopefully I see the guy again. Good input from most of you guys.

Actually, I spotted one walking a baby stroller with his blonde wifey the other day.
He is one of the rare exceptions of how a brotha succumbs to domestication from the wildlife refuge just 15 miles from ma snob hood in the 94024 zip code.
Look it up.

Ebony tuner shop.....yo?

If he had been white and looked all thugged out and ghetto, you wouldn't have talked to him right?
If he had looked decent and been black, you would have talked to him right?
It isn't fucking racism, it's classes of society. Regardless of color, dress like a piece of shit... get treated like one. Dress respectable, get respect. The end.
BATMAN 02-22-2006, 06:00 PM i concur with 0.

No.
Say No To Pistons 02-22-2006, 08:10 PM yes that is. it makes me cry.
aznpoopy 02-22-2006, 09:26 PM it makes me lactate.

+1 on that.... Though in my cases, I wasn't dressed like a piece of shit...
At least I hope not.... :( lol
DarkAngelKamui 02-22-2006, 09:39 PM Ebony tuner shop.....yo?
lol, sorry.... No "Teck" army gear, intercoolers or springs on my walls... I just help build ECUs... :D
Supper 02-22-2006, 09:40 PM eh... at leats you guys don't get treated like an oil field worker.
there are places we walk into in our carhartts and whatnot that they won't talk to you. Some restaurants won't seat you, a couple gun stores I know of won't let you even handle the guns, and there are a few burger joints that will kick you out if you sit down.
and I'm white too :(
;)
Cosby 02-22-2006, 11:39 PM When if comes to nice cars I'll talk to anybody. I don't know about black or white but when it comes to money it's all green ;) I met a guy a LONG time ago who had an mx-6 when I had mine and its a lucky thing because I was about to get jumped before the super sick illegal street races. This ghetto ass guy comes out of another crowd of black guys and gets in their faces. Turned out to be the guy I'd met way back. He seriously saved me from an ass beating.
FSURedFD 02-23-2006, 01:16 AM Zero might have a point. I'm not sure. I am friends w/ at least 2 black FD owners in Miami. This was just definitely different for me.
Manntis 02-23-2006, 04:05 AM People tend to prejudge. If it's not race, it's dress, economic status, gender, etc.
Then again, some people look for prejudice where none exists. I had one production assistant whine to me that I wasn't giving him certain tasks because he was native. The Assistant Director patiently explained to him that he hadn't completed the set protocol/set safety course required by the unions to be assigned such tasks., and that he had employment on the set at all was a result of us extending him a favour.
Some of the other natives working on set, fully qualified, told him to stop being such an Indian, get the proper training, and STFU.

He has a point, but it's also unrelated to your original statement....
In your first post, you did describe how the guy looked, but last time I checked don't FL people tend to dress like that due to the warm climate? Black folk that are "ghetto" up here usually aren't dressed that neatly....
Besides, I'm sure by your post that you didn't decide to not talk to him just because of the way he was "dressed"....
FeatherTheClutch 02-24-2006, 09:29 AM Sigh, i would of said nice car or somthing to him...depending if he said "thankz dawg" or "thanks man" would be the deciding factor of me talking to him.

:werd:
That's pretty much where I stand on it all.... Make your decisions to not associate with people AFTER they've proven themselves to be dumbasses, not before or on looks alone....
Savington 02-24-2006, 11:54 PM I'm with 0. It's not about what race they are, it's about how they dress and act and present themselves. If they're walking around in a "pimp"-suit, whether they're white, black, mexican, whatever, I don't want to have anything to do with them. It's a stereotype, sure, but it's not a racial stereotype. If you stood two guys in front of me, and one was a clean-cut black guy in a t-shirt and jeans, and one was a white wanna-be pimp with a bandana under his hat and one of those absurd matching outfits, I'd want to hang with the black guy.
You've gotta analyze WHY you thought what you did. If it was because he was black, then perhaps you should work on your biases and branch out. If it was because he acted like a wannbe rapper pimp "gangsta", then I see no problem with it, and most others won't, either.
Hell, even Bill Cosby thinks those guys are fucking morons. :)
vrooom305 02-25-2006, 09:30 PM ...I'd want to hang with the black guy...
you sure this line has no pun intended?
