MattB 09-13-2005, 02:05 PM i took my friend for a ride in my 87 TII not really expecting to impress him. i took an offramp...one of the pretty tight ones that turns 270 degrees at about 45-50 mph and he couldnt even believe my tires didnt squeal. he drove an eclipse so maybe thats why? it doesnt seem that amazing to me but to him it is i guess....
so to see if it was just him i took one of my other car friends out....and i took him to another exit ramp that does 270 degrees and this time i took it at or above 60MPH. the tires felt like they were just getting ready to break loose but there was minimal to no squeeling through the whole turn...
so the next day we went to school in my friends dads brand new 2005 Mustang GT convertible...he gets off the same exit i took the day before at 60 but he couldnt hold it and had to slow down...i mean i know the mustang isnt known for its handling but i figured...its new it should be better than my 7? does this make sense?
I LOVE MY 7!
-Matt
Skylance 09-13-2005, 02:26 PM Makes sense to me. Especially since the Mustang GT was a Convertible. It could probably take the corner if it was not a convertible. But then, maybe your friend just can't drive? (no offense if he can) - Any way, thats just my $0.02
Supper 09-13-2005, 02:36 PM Well, I can say I have never been able to take corners as fast, or as solid, as with my 83 FB's. Those things are just planted in the corners.
BATMAN 09-13-2005, 02:37 PM perception of speed is greater when u don't have the steering wheel.
MattB 09-13-2005, 02:46 PM ^ thats very true...well he isnt a great driver but still...neither am i. i just took the turn from out to in back to out at the end...
i mean i knew 7's held the road great but i didnt think they were THAT great...guess im just used to being around ricers...
jhammons01 09-13-2005, 02:55 PM Dude, your 7 handles extraordianarly well. That is the whole thing with the underpowered car. You can take people in the corners due the the wieght and suspension porperties.
Off ramp....similiar to yours but this one had a sharp right then a shart left (to straighten out) and the right turn lane had it's own lane so you could merge onto the street without stopping at a light by making a harder right.........Esses......
The Corvette cuts me off by going on the shoulder to get in the exit lane. I get pissed and stomp it and start pacing his exceleration as best I could.... 1/8 mile of exit lane he is way up there cause of his power.....he enters the first part of the off ramp and we are going about 80mph...he has to brake heavily to keep his car from sliding while I slow slighty but no brakes.......so I pull on him alot in that first long right. Then we enter the left part and he brakes further.....I am accelertaing out of the apex of the long right and I pull right up on his bumper inthe middle fo the left.......then we go into the right merge lane.......where he brakes again...harder....He knows I'm there and is going as fast as he can.....His wheels are squeeling under the load of the turn and brakes as I slowly fade to his left hand side of the merge and pass him as the road opens up after merge lane ends.....I am now in the left lane and he is in the right lane and my momentum is carrying me past him so fast that when I hear the his motor rev it was way too late...I was gone and......then a traffic light so I stopped. All this happened in about 2 minutes time maybe.......
The Vette driver wouldn't look at me....But, you know.....
MattB 09-13-2005, 03:12 PM haha thats awesome...the worst is how he cant even congradulate you...he is just pissed cause he thought his car could out-accelerate, and out-handle anything on the road.
7's are amazing....
theloudroom 09-13-2005, 06:42 PM Great story, jhammons01
I absolutely LOVE the handling on my 7. It saved my ass from hitting a black cow in the middle of the night :)
Toxico 09-23-2005, 05:46 AM if you think the stock suspension is good wait untill you start upgrading it. I've spent a lot of money on suspension and wheels and tires and results are mind blowing. I think the only thing I have left on the list is adjustable control links but no point to get those untill I have a way to conner balance the car.
theloudroom 09-23-2005, 07:24 AM I have 225's, poly bushings and adjustable sway bar links. It's definately tightened things up.

My vert handles much better than my hardtop did and they were the same year and model (98 GTs). The suspension is really stiff and it has AA traction rated tires... might be the diff.

Odd, I've always heard that (stereotypically) convertibles (in general) have worse handling. Supposedly because it does not have the hard top, then the body flex is greater. :dunno: So my question is, did your vert have the stock suspension? If it did, was it the same as what is stock on the hard top?

Very true usually you can feel the car flex more in a convertible, don't have the strengthener of the roof.

Has same suspension as non-vert im pretty sure. Has two or three X-braces connecting the control arms, sub frame, etc. underneath I guess to make up for the lack of a hard top.

That's probably what it is then.
derek1987 01-03-2006, 10:19 PM I know stock and old FC's handle better than most car i have driven.
RX7 are known for handle damn well
Tofuball 01-24-2006, 09:12 AM I cant speek for all convertables (most of them DO flex more in turns, and weigh a bit more) but my RX-7 Convertable with stock suspension is much more planted in turns/transitions then the hard tops that I have owned.
Eatmyclutch 02-04-2006, 09:37 PM bad questions will recieve bad answers
breckboarder55 02-14-2006, 06:19 PM yes, yes they do, especially when your running tokicos, and konis, bars and 8in wide es 100s...

Mason Rx7 05-08-2006, 11:45 PM My FC handled like ass....
Until I put new tires on it. :)
Cosby 05-09-2006, 12:05 AM oh no!
fcdrifter13 05-09-2006, 12:21 AM I heart DTSS.........when it works correctly.
Say No To Pistons 05-09-2006, 04:48 AM wtf?
Tofuball 05-09-2006, 07:15 AM When the DTSS started kicking in at first, it scared the hell out of me.
I thought the rear end had let go, but I couldnt hear it :O
And I proceeded to flawlessly make a turn at speeds I thought impossable.
So yeh, I agree, I like the DTSS :p
BATMAN 05-09-2006, 09:52 AM i had a FC prior to my FD and the FC was more forgiving at the limits due to the DTSS, which emulated 4-wheel steering.........
Say No To Pistons 05-09-2006, 02:30 PM does adding that giant wing to your fd make it more forgiving?
BATMAN 05-09-2006, 02:37 PM dunno..... there's alot of downforce and I to find out the limits I'm well past the 100 mph mark.
If something happens to me where would the fun on this forum be?
:)
Say No To Pistons 05-09-2006, 04:54 PM then you shall give me money to buy a Batman FD and i shall take your place.

Too bad mine doesn't work. :(
fcdrifter13 05-10-2006, 01:30 AM 150$ or so and get the bushings and arm it fucking rocks hard core.
Say No To Pistons 05-10-2006, 03:11 PM why dont you just delete the whole dtss?
Poo On A Stick 05-19-2006, 01:47 PM i like cars
psychoseven 06-17-2006, 06:32 PM ive never driven a car that handles as good as my 7. but i dont have as much experience driving other cars as some people might
fcdrifter13 06-17-2006, 06:56 PM why dont you just delete the whole dtss?
Some people are for the delete some are not. Most that are for the delete kit are to cheap to pay for the new parts, and have never rode in or driven a car with a working DTSS system.

I'm deleting mine since I just don't like the way it feels.
I have been in cases where I am pushing the car hard and start to feel the rear squiggle thinking that I am starting to oversteer and it scares the bejesus out of me.
Nicholas P. 06-20-2006, 11:07 PM The 1st gen 84-85 was made with a little over steer, They dropped the rear end some. It has very good handling if you have a good suspension. otherwise, its just like any other japanese car.
Nicholas P. 06-20-2006, 11:08 PM I just realized I posted in the 2nd gen section. sry...
