Thinking of doing a new setup... see what reliable sites you guys can find me the stuff for the best prices.

(1) P4 EE (dual core HT)-undecided about speed.
(1) motherboard... requirements:
-1 pci express x16
-3 pci express x1
-DDR 2 support (2-4gb capable)
-onboard audio and lan

Of course... lots of DDR2 to go with it....

I'm undecided about hard drives... throw some recommendations (bang for buck) at me...

If you would have posted this about a month ago, I would have sold you my intel deal. Pentium D 820/PCI-E Intel board for about $300.

There should be a ton of those combo's on ebay, so i'd give that a look.

Otherwise, Newegg.com would be my next choice. Fast shipping and great service.

I was thinking about this for storage.... mmm sweet, 150mb/sec.

I'm guilty of not keeping up with the ever changing hardware of today. Maybe you can answer this for me... I couldn't find any good articles...

The p4 EE dual-core processor. Suppose it's rated at 2.8ghz. Is that 2 HT processors at 2.8ghz a piece, or is that combined speed? I would assume combined speed, but nothing i've ready is very clear.

Seems like the EE is top of the line. The newest interface is PCI-E too right?

No faster memory than DDR2 (besides old rambus which died)?

As for HD's, are you going for PATA or SATA?

SATA is for sure faster, but you can get a ton of PATA drives for dirt cheap now.

SATA
PCI-E
P4 EE or HT (haven't decided yet)
and lots of DDR2

I want a bully computer.

I try to keep up, but what I have is good enough. I run 2 Athlon 2500+ machines OC'd at 3200+. One runs XP MCE '05 and the other XP Pro. Both with 1GB of Ram and 250GB hard drives with a measly 2MB Cache with nVidia 5200 cards + ATI Tuner cards. I don't do any gaming on these machines, so I can afford to skimp out on some of the higer end components.

Pentium 4 EE is a single core processor i believe, but uses a huge cache.

PCI-E is the newest interface, and DDR2 is the fastest memory you can buy, unless i'm missing something.

BTW, are you using this for gaming, media, a little everything?

everything.... but typically every day use.... i want speed.

If the EE is single core, the D is dual core? There's too many processors out on the market right now.

edit: intel's site is the best...imagine that.

EE has a higher clock speed rating.... but the D is dual.... hmmmm.

Pentium D is the Dual Core Processor. The P4EE is just a P4 with a larger cache.

If you're not doing a lot/if any gaming on this machine, i'd recommend this. It's plenty fast, has PCI-E Video/Peripheral slots, and onboard sound/nic. Add some ram, video card, and a hard drive, you've got yourself one fast machine.

These bundles were sold by Intel to Retail Tech Sales guys (Best Buy, CC, Office Depot, etc.). I got one, and ebay'd it for a profit.

I wonder how the HT EE compares to the D... I'd love to see tests of that

If you do any gaming, then get the EE. Pentium D is "so so" when it comes to gaming.

The Pentium D is geared more for workhorse computing/media center stuff.

If you're looking for dual-core and gaming, even the cheapest AMD destroys the most expensive Pentium.

AMD vs Intel.... since AMD showed up on the big stage there has been tests showing conflicting results.

Intel wins in one magazine, AMD wins in another... the biggest variable is who advertises in which magazine, site, or whatever.

Considering concepts in these tests.... Intel > AMD

I used to buy stuff from TigerDirect.com years ago. Newegg has better prices now, so that's my online retailer of choice for computer parts.

I'm sorry . . . but I'm still lol at the ATA133 cable! ha ha ha. Seriously though, I've never had any problems from them. Maybe I should stop buying from them before my luck runs out.

Yeah. I got on the phone with a customer service rep and said:

"Though this rounded ATA133 cable is pretty trick and will look nice in my case, what exactly am I supposed to hook it up to?"
"Well sir, it goes from your mainboard to your HDD's."
"Thats exactly my point. So why don't you tell me where my hard drives are?"

-silence-

I never bought or heard from them again.

Ok, let me get this straight. They "lost" your HDD's. you called to find out where they are. They couldn't find them so they sent you an ATA133 cable.

Some people never cease to amaze me.

I've never seen Intel beat AMD in gaming in any publication, is there a link?
