BATMAN 09-01-2005, 11:17 AM A foundation campaigning against drunken driving said Thursday that a landmark decision handing down a death sentence to an intoxicated driver who killed four people would help reduce the carnage on Thailand's roads.
A 23-year-old former college student, Nattapong Raksapong, was sentenced to death by a court in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday on several charges related to a 2004 drunk driving rampage in which four people were killed, four injured and five vehicles damaged.
"This is a historic verdict and should set a precedent in cases of drunken drivers who kill innocent people on the roads," said Surasit Silapangam of the Don't Drink and Drive Foundation.
He said that drunken driving was involved in some 80 percent of the more than 14,500 deaths and 1.08 million injuries on Thailand's roads last year.
Thailand has one of the world's highest mortality rates from road accidents.
Surasit said that during the foundation's 10 years of campaigning, drunken drivers normally received only suspended jail sentences.
While intoxicated, Nattapong first struck a motorcycle, sped away and then crashed into two other motorcycles while driving a six-wheel truck in the northeastern province of Mahasarakham. He tried to flee but crashed into a truck.
Nattapong denied charges of intentionally trying to kill someone, saying he was just involved in an accident.

SpartanTS 09-01-2005, 11:27 AM Serves him right. I've been hit by a drunk driver and that event changed my life.
The DUI laws in the US aren't strict enough. If you get caught driving drunk, you should get 10 years automatic and never be allowed to drive again.
meddle 09-01-2005, 11:31 AM t. I've been hit by a drunk driver and that event changed my life.
Wah wah wah
I'm sure it did. You probably cashed out brotha'.
The laws are more than strict enough. .08 is a fucking joke. It should be returned to .10 nationally.
BATMAN 09-01-2005, 11:35 AM i've been rear-ended by a car full of mexicans with no insurance on their end in my FC years ago.
The driver was DUI.
.8 or less is just fine with me.
meddle 09-01-2005, 11:39 AM Well accidents are going to happen. This country is just slowly turning into this PC safety police society where its more important to make laws more strict than promote a society of reasonable people using discretion and good judgement.

BATMAN 09-01-2005, 12:10 PM Well accidents are going to happen. This country is just slowly turning into this PC safety police society where its more important to make laws more strict than promote a society of reasonable people using discretion and good judgement.
that would be fine and dandy if i can carry and use a gun at my discretion.
until then........
Savington 09-01-2005, 01:10 PM .08 is a fine limit. That's 2hrs for 1st drink, 1hr per drink after that, on a full stomach.
1st offense: 30 days in jail, no questions asked. Driver's license revoked, you may REAPPLY and RETEST for it in one year. Required to take a drinking course.
2nd offense: 90 days in jail, no questions asked. Driver's license revoked permanently.
3rd offense, or any offense on a DUI-revoked license: 2 years prison, parole for 5.
If your BAC is over .15, skip to second offense. If your BAC is over .22, skip to third offense and add a revoked license with 5 year waiting period.
If you kill someone while drunk, it's 5 years per person dead, minimum. If the person is disfigured for life, such as in Batman's example, you get 3 per person. If you get out after a nickel/dime, and you kill another person via DUI, you get life in prison, no parole, no questions asked.
BATMAN 09-01-2005, 01:13 PM 1st offense cost about $10,000 after it's all said and done.
I know, had a co-worker, a hot blonded get pulled over after she drank 6 beers on an empty stomach.
And she's only 110 lbs.
Her dad is an Alchoholic, must be some genetic thing to take that much on an empty stomach.
meddle 09-01-2005, 01:17 PM The lowered limits are all about revenue. If your willing to spend some money, you can get a slap on the wrist.
BATMAN 09-01-2005, 01:21 PM revenue to pay for the prisons, guards, etc.
I'm fine with that.

Yeah, when you're in a coma from a DUI accident, you deserved to be paid. And if anyone hits me at .8+ ever again, i'll make sure they don't have a pot to piss in, nor a window to throw it from. My references reside in prison in Memphis, TN.
So you can STFU
DarkAngelKamui 09-01-2005, 01:35 PM Huh, well you can't really argue against that sort of testimonial....
Served....
