As far as I am aware, freecreditreport.com as well as pulling your first reports from the three bureaus is all free, they just make you sign up for a subscription to something which is where you pay. Of course, non of this is listed in any fine print that I saw when I got "scammed" also. Call me "naive," but the $29.99 or whatever it was that I paid I figured was worth it knowing that I don't have any deliquent or fishy accounts that could hurt my score.

My WAMU/Chase credit card gives me something similar. It's not a proper FICO score apparently, but it's good enough for credit monitoring in my eyes.
