Supper 09-28-2007, 12:13 PM :D
Finished classes early yesterday so we decided to hit the road and head up north to Hanna, WY to see if we could find an interesting looking goat. Well, we found one. This guy is pretty old and has regressed quite a bit, but I liked his cutters and the curl so I took him.

The funny thing is as follows; we drove up on this buck and one single doe just laying there in the sagebrush. They didn't really seem to be in any hurry to go anywhere, unlike all the others we had seen to this point. I get out of the pasenger side while Corey ranged him at 320 yards, drew down on him with the good old Tikka 280 but decided I didn't like the shot. Corey proceeded to rev the engine, honk the horn, yell, whistle, and generally just try to piss the goat off to get him to stand up.
We finally decide to see how close we could get to him before he decided to stand up. Several times it looked like he was going to stand up but he never did. Finally at 143 yards his doe stood up and he followed. I quickly sat down and got comfortable while waiting for him to get clear of the doe so I could kill him. A few seconds go by and he finally does exactly that. Just as Corey said "He's clear." I pulled the trigger and he dropped like a box of rocks. Wound up breaking his shoulder since I couldn't get a clean neck shot, oh well because dead is dead.
All in all, not a bad thursday afternoon.
Vert8813B 09-28-2007, 12:22 PM You're gonna eat the meat right? The liver is awesome.
Supper 09-28-2007, 12:39 PM You're gonna eat the meat right? The liver is awesome.
you've actually had the liver from an antelope, eh?
We don't eat any of the organ meat, too much risk for blood deseases to be transfered. Especially eating the dumping grounds of the body (the liver and kidneys). Another thing you never want to do is eat anything containig wild game marrow or brains, especially with stuff like CWD floating around out there.
but yes, all the muscle tissue that is edible we eat. I'm having 10 pounds of polish sausage made out of this old boy, breakfast and italian saussage made out of one of the does I'm going to shoot tomorrow and the fawn I wacked two weekends ago was just normal cutup (steaks, roasts, and burger).
Vert8813B 09-28-2007, 12:45 PM Antelope liver owns dude. If you cook stuff above 140 degrees the risk is minimal.
2ndGen.Rocket 09-28-2007, 12:48 PM You went to find an interesting looking goat?
Vert8813B 09-28-2007, 12:56 PM Do it muslim style yo. Let the blood drip out too. Don't let it stay in the body.
wotnartd 09-28-2007, 03:06 PM CWD is bad, mmmkay?
Supper 09-28-2007, 07:00 PM Guts belong in the gut pile for the yotes and corvids :)
We always let them hang and get all the blood out of em, wash em out as good as possible too. Trust me, we take as few risks as possible when it comes to the meat we eat.
Eatmyclutch 09-28-2007, 10:26 PM Looked like fun.
rx-7_Z06 09-30-2007, 01:07 PM He looks sleepy.
Excellent work!

Yeah, when we get a deer, we let it bleed out good. And we just leave the guts at the scene of the crime.
BadDude22 10-02-2007, 12:40 AM WOW I need to go hunting. That guy looks delicious.

Don't get all "progressive" on us. You can't help but be be redneck where you live. Where is that Pot and Kettle thing?

Yeah I grew up in the country and live in the south. I've never once left class, got in my truck, gone looking for "an interesting goat", found one, shot it from my truck, and then went home. That's fucking redneck.
jhammons01 10-02-2007, 12:21 PM lolzers
Supper 10-02-2007, 12:46 PM shot it from my truck
when did I ever say I shot it from the pickup?
Vert8813B 10-02-2007, 02:14 PM I skeet-shot your mom in my truck! Ha!

My bad, you shot him right after you stepped out of the truck while your friend honked the horn. That's illegal where I'm from, mainly to prevent yokel forms of hunting like driving around and shooting from your window.

guess you need a lesson in reading.

why don't you try coming out here and antelope hunting just to see how much different it is. Kind of hard to hunt from a tree stand when there aren't any trees, same goes for deer and elk.

You stepped out of the truck and shot him. What's the difference? You still rode up on an animal in a truck and shot him while standing next to it.

I wouldn't ever call what you guys do "hunting". That is "riding around in a truck until we come up on some animals that can't run away and shooting them"

I wouldn't ever call what you guys do hunting either, you just sit around on your ass in a tree waiting for an animal to walk past so you can shoot at em.
If you think all we do is drive around looking for animals that "can't run away" you are more then welcome to buy yourself an elk tag and come out here elk hunting next year. I'll take you out into some of the wilderness areas so you can see what our serious hunts look like.
Vert8813B 10-02-2007, 03:38 PM Hunt Mexicans instead. They most def try to run away.

To me it sounds like he walked a bit first, range at truck ~350yds iirc, and when he shot, ~140yds. A bit more than a step.
And have you ever seen an antelope run? They can flat move and are quite hard to get that close too.

:bigthumb:
Thats why there are warning signs on several highways up here that say "Caution: Antelope entering Highway at 65mph."
When I was bowhunting these buggers this year we got within 35 yards of one buck but he busted me while I was halfway through the draw. Couldn't ever get close enough to one to think of using a bow for the rest of the season, thats why I killed this one with the rifle.
driftmunkey 10-03-2007, 12:45 PM Ive never been good enough with a bow to hunt with one. I would really like to hunt antelope here in oregon, but I need a scope mount for my rifle. I have an old mauser my grandpa brought back from ww2. Nobody where I live has a mount for that kind of rifle since it attaches to the side of the action and not on rails.
Richter12x2 10-03-2007, 12:46 PM Pshht guns and bows - a real hunter would do it with a sword. :D
