I was thinking about doing a little goal setting and was wondering if anyone else here has a plan, formal or not, for themselves. The past year for me has been filled with getting a better job, selling my house and moving so I don't commute 40 miles to said job and waiting for my new house to be built. It sounds materialistic, but most of the reason for moving was to get back the nearly 2 hours each day spent commuting. Never mind the 4 gallons of gas. Of course I still play the roll of husband and father and maintain my car hobby.

For those of you that still live at home I'd like to let you know your mom is still going to bug you after you leave. Lately my mother has been encouraging me to further my education as I have time to study while at work. I even have GI Bill benefits that would pay for most of it. The only problem is motivation and giving up the time. I'm pretty selfish with the free time that I have. I don't know if I want to give that up since it would also cut into family time. I'm all for education, but I don't think my two sons are going to benefit from seeing less of dad. Until I make up my mind on continuing my education I have no plan.

Just curious... During your family time, are your wife's boyfriends included?

1 year - I'll be buying a new(er) car or at least shopping for one. I'll be 3 months away from getting my undergrad degree. Exploring my options with Office Depot in order to get a headstart on job searching.

2 years - Possibly married by then, if I can get a set wedding date.

5 years - I'll be well into my career, done with college for now, maybe get my MBA, married, one kid, 3000+ Square foot house, and a 6 figure net worth. Shouldn't be too hard if I stay on the path that i'm on right now.

Why pay off the student loan, if you're gonna buy a new car in 3 years that requires a loan? Why not let the student loan ride (it's one of THE lowest APR's you'll ever get), save the cash that you're obviously dumping into that into some sort of savings that will earn a lot and that you can add to, and then in 3 years (or less) pay for the new car with cash?

I once remembered I wanted a Range Rover, then I saw that it got 12/16 MPG. Rich or not, fuck that. I'd rather have a luxury sedan and get decent mileage.

They are making Luxury hybrids now, oddly enough....

1.) Establish proper budgeting for my finances and return to college, finally figure out which of my three main talents I will actually commit to having a career in...

2.) Finish work on both my RX-7 and 240SX, more practice days with drifting and try to establish a name for myself in the local scene...

5.) Finish with college, consider going to graduate school to further solidify my career...

There's more, but that's the jist of it

1 year: Good grades, start prepping for SATs, possibly get a job so I can start saving for a car, no speeding tickets in my first year w/ license.
2nd year: Good SAT scores, apply to a decent 4-year Mech. Engineering college
7th year: Graduated, start living on my own, stable job, start saving for a house

Long-term: Small house in good area, enough income so I don't have to worry about the bills, and enough disposable income to run a kart and some Spec Miata races.

That is all very true, The loan is at 3.5 %, But it is an unsurcured loan. With a car loan I can always dump the car and cover the left over and be out from under it. I have nothing physical to show for this loan. and I am kind of already doing this. I saved 16k before she left for school. used what I needed and payed cash for a summer term. Have just at 11K left that I could put on the loan But by waiting I will have the loan paid and the cash, Plan to use it on my next house or for the car.
