Sean951 01-25-2005, 03:33 PM Hi all,
You may know that i have a porsche 944 turbo as a project car. while i was working today i just came up with the thought that the 944 is a wonderfull project car.....If you have the money for it, which i dont. the plan is to put back my porsche as stock as possible, sell the mods i got on ebay, and buy a new project car. thats where you guys come in, im looking for something cheap. Heres the criteria, i would like it to be rear wheel drive if possible, 4 cylinder, turbo or non turbo dosnt matter, reliable engine, cheap parts, good aftermarket scene(dont care about bodykits and bling-bling, just performance), handling should be decent, lightweight(under 2600 pounds), and newer than the 70s. im looking to spend up to 2,000 for it, so anybody have a good car in mind?

That's a fine piece of automobobile if you ask meh. But then again, I'm an asshole.
Cosby 01-25-2005, 04:12 PM miata
Sean951 01-25-2005, 04:13 PM thats def. something special, but was looking for somthing not so centered to one type of motorsport.
Sean951 01-25-2005, 08:45 PM i am leaning towards a miata, but everyone has them. what kind of engine swaps can you do with them, and how much do they weigh stock/striped out?
Cosby 01-25-2005, 09:58 PM You can't do a WHOLE lot with engine swaps. You can make them pretty damn quick though and there are plenty of options out there to race them inexpensively. Chip will have to answer this
Sean951 01-25-2005, 10:13 PM will a rotary fit in there?:) if i did get one i would probly just do a homebrew turbo.
SpartanTS 01-25-2005, 10:26 PM I was thinking MR2 or Pontiac Fiero. There are some engine swap options available for those cars as well. Rear engine, RWD and pretty good power. Both cars are lighter than 2600 pounds if i'm not mistaken.
Sean951 01-25-2005, 10:30 PM yeah, i was looking at those to.....i saw a site where someone put a northstar V8 in a 1st gen mr2.....mad, but awsome. i also know you can put a 350 in a fiero.
rxtasy 01-25-2005, 11:21 PM will a rotary fit in there?:) if i did get one i would probly just do a homebrew turbo.
rotary in a miata is a swap i'd like to do. if u decide to get one and do that, i'd like to help. being a machinist, i should be able to fab just about anything.

HTM Impreza WRX 01-26-2005, 03:04 AM be like everyone else and get a 240...it meets your criteria...btw, good luck finding a miata for that cheap that's worth a damn
pieboy6823 01-26-2005, 01:11 PM ill sell you my 1995 beretta z26 for a grand!you can do a engine swap for this(the make an quad 4 h.o turbo)the stock quad 4 h.o puts out about 210 horsepower stock! with the turbo or even the twin turbo edition it would have hella lot more power.
p.s. the head gasket is blown.
Chipster 01-26-2005, 10:19 PM Your wanting a miata but feel like everyone has them? WTF I think me and mitchell are the two only modded miatas in sptbg lol.
A miata would be a good car to get, but i doubt you'll find anything special for around 2k. You can get a used 1.6 miata (89-93) for that much, and you can get a greddy turbo kit (seen them sell for 600 before on classifieds) and you can build upon that kit. Its a pretty popular route for the budget orientated.
As for swaps, there really isn't much that you can do. Several people have done rotary swaps but it ends up being a super big FAB job and costing a whole heck of a lot of money. Most popular swap by far is the 302 into the miata, whic supposedly isnt all that hard to do, theres a lot of literature on that.
Another good thing is that they are pretty light. Mine weighs in at 2353 lbs w/ full tank and no driver. The older ones are even more lighter. Earlier miatas weigh even less, i think the earliest 90's were about 2100 lbs
The aftermarket is huge for miatas, and parts are pretty cheap. We even have a pretty good local scene. BRP in mauldin is pretty much the end all of supercharging specialists for miatas in the nation. Luckily its right down the road from us

PS
It's also FWD and only comes in Auto
Sean951 01-27-2005, 03:52 PM thanks for the info chipster, i checked into the rotary and the v8 engine swap. both looked expensive, the rotary looks almost impossible unless you have deep pockets. the supercharging option sounds very interesting, it is awsome tha specialist in the subject are local.
pieboy6823 01-27-2005, 11:16 PM no they made 5 speed z26's but the quad 4 ho,turbo, and twin turbo only come in 5 speed(no automatics) because the quad 4 h.o. was only avalible in the gtz and z26 models! gtz's are fast as shit(quick) i blew a turbo civic in mine(with just intake and exhust! there is a guy on www.berettanet.com that put a quad 4 h.o turbo in a 1994 z26.but for more info on the quad 4 h.o. twin turbo go to www.gmfwd.com you will have to look under forum and then under 2.3 the it will say turbo or non-turbo go to turbo! nasty as hell!
preludedude 01-27-2005, 11:41 PM I see that illstreet has gone downhill...we are actually discussing modding a beretta...

pieboy6823 02-01-2005, 10:20 PM yo if your still trying to figure out what kind of car to get i think the best way to go would be a 3000gt vr4 there is not THAT many good ones around so it would be something diferent and you can find engine swaps for it(im sure)and they look nasty as hell!

so lets see? a 3000gt vr4? so that is TT and AWD, and as far as engine swaps go?
"lets take out this TT 300 horsepower engine and swap it for something better"
seem logical? didnt think so...

N1XRR 02-02-2005, 10:25 AM You mentioned a rotary in a Miata...
Why not just buy a 2nd gen RX7? Find a 86-87 base model...right there is your 2600lbs. Remove A/C, heat, carpet, rear hatch (replace with lexan), stock exhaust, emissions controls, gut the dashboard, and remove the sound deadening material and you have yourself a 2200lb car.
Infact, I'll tell you in about 2 weeks how much that setup weighs because thats exactly what we've done to our project RX7.
Turbo engine is a direct swap, add a standalone computers (Megasquirt 2) and there you have a perfectly reliable, very fast car. About 200-220whp without porting and it'll be very fast.
Koni Yellows, 350lb front/250lb rear springs, rear camber adjusting rod and front camber plates and now you have a very fast turning car.
pieboy6823 02-02-2005, 12:00 PM sh*t you guys are pickey as hell so just get a ford feistiva and put a 5.0 in it.
Sean951 02-02-2005, 04:04 PM N1XRR, that sounds like a very good plan and not to expensive either. tell me how your project rx7 comes out when its finnished.
i think ive decided to wait on the project untill this summer, and im pretty sure i know what im going to get. Mark is right, the 3000gt vr4 is expensive, awd, and not to mention very heavy. i have heard they tip the scales at allmost 4000 pounds with a driver, i want a sportscar not a boat. thanks for all the input guys.

You won't need to go to nearly that length unless your very serious (like we are).
Cosby 02-03-2005, 04:09 PM someone made a big mess under the car
pieboy6823 02-03-2005, 04:38 PM what in the hell do you guys plan on doing to that car?for real doe, what all are you doing to it? the car looks like somebody took a potato peeler to it!
Sean951 02-03-2005, 04:46 PM it looks like its for the 2005 grassroots motorsport challenge. the budget of the car has to be 2005 dollars i think.
Cosby 02-03-2005, 05:09 PM That's right sean, you win 3 pounds of tar!
Sean951 02-03-2005, 07:46 PM awsome, where do i pick it up
N1XRR 02-04-2005, 08:19 AM awsome, where do i pick it up
From the dumpster where we thru it out last night...
Yes, its a $2005 Challenge car. Right now, we're about 40% done...now to the hard works starts. Sanding a bondo'ing the body, getting a nice even coat of primer and finally painting it. Then its off to do engine/transmission/diff install, then intercooler piping, then test/tune. Lots of work to do in only a month and a half.
