$100T2 05-14-2008, 10:45 AM I bought a one man auger to be able to dig some holes for a fence I'm putting up. However, in RI, rocks and tree roots are everywhere. Is there a type of auger head that will cut through tree roots? The auger is useless if I can only go down 6" and slam into roots. wotnartd 05-14-2008, 10:49 AM Turbocharge it. Tofuball 05-14-2008, 11:01 AM 1) Dig till ya can't 2) Pull the auger out 3) throw TNT into the hole 4) GOTO 1 ;) toyo7 05-14-2008, 11:06 AM the only augers i've come in contact with on a weekly basis are the ones on a zamboni Vert8813B 05-14-2008, 11:07 AM David Ortiz kinda looks like an Ogre Kev. $100T2 05-14-2008, 11:15 AM LOL....our health and safety nazis would put you out of a job fast for a job like this where are many borings to be advanced(?), I would just hire a conventional truck mounted hollow stem auger rig for a day, they could zip these borings in like butter Unfortunately, that's not feasible with the way the trees are in my yard... Truck couldn't get around them. I'm buying a BFA: Big Fuckin' Axe. When I get to a root, I'll chop it out with the axe, then go back to digging. toyo7 05-14-2008, 11:22 AM i'm only going 2 feet to put the posts in for my 6ft fence. would he really need 3-4? wotnartd 05-14-2008, 12:14 PM When we do fences, we to them at 3 feet. Don't forget to call diggers hotline, though. rtryb2200 05-14-2008, 07:47 PM my dad has an auger for his Deere. I put up a 4 foot fence using 8ft posts, 2-3 feet in the ground Supper 05-14-2008, 09:19 PM Single Man augers are worthless. You need at least a two man auger or rent a Bobcat mounted auger FTW. Tofuball 05-14-2008, 09:28 PM I still like my idea :) $100T2 05-14-2008, 10:35 PM Single Man augers are worthless. You need at least a two man auger or rent a Bobcat mounted auger FTW. When I'm not hitting roots, it is awesome. I'm putting up one 4' fence and one 5' fence. I'm only planning on going down 3'. wotnartd 05-14-2008, 11:45 PM Single man work until you need to get work done. czarofzar 05-15-2008, 06:32 AM haha i remember one of my first jobs was manning a post hole digger, After sticking the post in (below 44 inches), without mixing, they had me pour the water in first and then half of the cement bag. What a ratty outfit. Supper 05-15-2008, 12:48 PM Single man work until you need to get work done. Exactly :bigthumb: $100T2 05-18-2008, 08:20 PM Finished the new 4' fence today. I got the holes as deep as I could, and where I couldn't get them deep enough, I just poured in concrete. I have a little bit of finish work to do tomorrow night, then it's on to the big ass 5' fence. That one will be a bitch and a half, especially since it's far away from the house. czarofzar 05-18-2008, 08:32 PM In Arizona, you’ll likely find block walls versus fences. We have block walls put up at $17 a linear foot. Vert8813B 05-18-2008, 10:13 PM In Soviet Russia, car drives you! czarofzar 05-18-2008, 10:19 PM drunk? Vert8813B 05-18-2008, 10:20 PM Buzzed; yes. czarofzar 05-18-2008, 10:52 PM I have to get up in 6 hours. Vert8813B 05-18-2008, 10:55 PM Yeah; just about the same here. I had Thursday and Friday off from work. It always sucks coming back from a long weekend. Ark2 05-18-2008, 11:10 PM I have tomorrow off! $100T2 05-19-2008, 11:36 AM In Arizona, you’ll likely find block walls versus fences. We have block walls put up at $17 a linear foot. Then I saved an assload of money doing this myself. The big fence is going to be 144 feet. $100T2 05-24-2008, 02:05 PM Here's the new fence! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/$100T2/P5240035.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/$100T2/P5240045.jpg czarofzar 05-24-2008, 02:32 PM jesus christ you kicked ass. Thats a nice job :) $100T2 05-24-2008, 10:50 PM jesus christ you kicked ass. Thats a nice job :) Thanks. I'm very proud of it, it turned out far better than I thought it would. dano670 05-25-2008, 12:19 AM I doubt it's that much, perhaps a grand...I just pay someone to do stuff like this anymore because my weekend time is too short A grand, cause we can all toss a grand around! Chump change right! I respect him more for not just saving money, but taking care of things by himself. That is the way it should be and bet if he needed help, I bet his friends would be right there pitching in a hand. dano670 05-25-2008, 01:02 AM I doubt it (about friends pitching in), the sense of community is lost for those who are outside of a church, and even for many in a church these days I disagree. I don't belong to any church in particular. But I have voluntered in places from Oklahoma to Mississippi. My friends in Georgia pride themselves on helping our friends out. There are many non-denominational churches who prides themselves on helping people out. $100T2 05-25-2008, 07:00 AM I doubt it (about friends pitching in), the sense of community is lost for those who are outside of a church, and even for many in a church these days Actually, I just had about 10 people over last night to help me with a tree I needed to drop without taking out a shed. Not a single one of them go to church. as far as installing fence yourself, you can find a a couple of hard working hispanics off Craigslist who will work for $20-$30 an hour and do a better job at stuff like this than anyone on this forum ever could...kevin isn't any carpenter, lol I've noticed: You're an argumentative jerk just to be an argumentative jerk. Have you ever seen a psychologist? I think you might be borderline or bipolar. You could use some meds. Oh, and yeah, that's what I want to do: Hire some strange immigrants off of Craigslist to come to my secluded house in the woods so they can scope the place out. Thanks, but no thanks. I suppose you could re-roof your own house, too, but why would you? My point of view is, if anyone can do something, I can learn to do it myself. Talk all the nonsense about my carpentry skills you want, but bottom line: The fence is up, it looks good, it is completely functional, and does what I want it to do. Therefore, it's a success. wotnartd 05-25-2008, 07:09 AM I doubt it (about friends pitching in), the sense of community is lost for those who are outside of a church, and even for many in a church these days as far as installing fence yourself, you can find a a couple of hard working hispanics off Craigslist who will work for $20-$30 an hour and do a better job at stuff like this than anyone on this forum ever could...kevin isn't any carpenter, lol I suppose you could re-roof your own house, too, but why would you? lol Kevin, how nice of a fence do you want? Me and my dad can be there in 24 hours, rent a two man auger, and get a couple cases of good beer, I've not had Yuengling yet. $100T2 05-25-2008, 07:21 AM I'm building a 32 x 40 pen for the goats, chickens and ducks (and in the future, maybe a horse or two). It needs to be 5' high. I've already bought all the materials (same stuff as the other fence). The only big problem is that the ground is very uneven, rocky, and has a shit load of pine roots. Plus, the area I'm building in had to be cleared of trees first. Here's what it looks like as of this morning, which is after about 12 trees have been cleared from the area, not counting mountain laurel and all that. This is the view from my upstairs bathroom. You can see the current, 100% ghetto goat pen my GFs ex put up. He basically did it as cheap and shitty as he could, because he's like that. The shed needs to be moved back about 30 feet into where the new pen will be... My buddy has a trailer with a winch on it, we're going to winch it onto his trailer then lower it in the new spot. The ghetto pen will be yanked down and taken to the dump, the stumps will be ground down, the ground will be leveled, then it will all be nice grass for the kids to play in. $100T2 05-25-2008, 01:56 PM And here's the yard after burning the shit out of what was cut down. $100T2 06-01-2008, 08:58 PM Rented a backhoe for the day today. My backyard looks like a warzone now. I dug up about 80% rocks, 17% roots and 3% dirt. It's unbelievable rocky here. rtryb2200 06-01-2008, 09:54 PM I doubt it (about friends pitching in), the sense of community is lost for those who are outside of a church, and even for many in a church these days as far as installing fence yourself, you can find a a couple of hard working hispanics off Craigslist who will work for $20-$30 an hour and do a better job at stuff like this than anyone on this forum ever could...kevin isn't any carpenter, lol I suppose you could re-roof your own house, too, but why would you? Seriously...I saved myself at least 4 grand by doing my roof myself. I get a lot more out of seeing something I accomplished. In saving that 4 grand I have probably made another 2 investing it. Plus I get the some return value on my house, sort of a no brainer. Paying people 20-30 bucks an hour for manually labor?? Sounds like a rip off to me, but then again this is WI. And why do you have to be racist about it. I'll come down and work for 25 bucks doing manual labor. Why are you so negative... rtryb2200 06-01-2008, 09:57 PM Good work Kevin....looks like you and the animals will be enjoying it the rest of the summer. rtryb2200 06-05-2008, 05:24 PM No rotted wood, house is a normal L shaped ranch house....I was quoted by 2 different companies for 6k and I did it for right around 2. I guess it is not the same for me because I have 4 and 5 day weekends $100T2 06-06-2008, 02:55 PM nothing "negative" about it...my weekend time is too precious to blow doing shit work like roofing, I make enough money to pay someone else have at it...life is short And I take pride in doing things myself. It's nice to look out at that fence and say, "Hey, I built that." Just as I take pride in the stuff I do the cars, building a fort/tree house for my kids, whatever. I enjoy doing stuff like this. To each his own. Tofuball 06-06-2008, 04:39 PM And I take pride in doing things myself. It's nice to look out at that fence and say, "Hey, I built that." Just as I take pride in the stuff I do the cars, building a fort/tree house for my kids, whatever. I enjoy doing stuff like this. To each his own. Word. Plus, when you pay other people to do it (around here at least) it always gets done WRONG, and costs a FORTUNE. Tofuball 06-07-2008, 12:01 PM Been there, done that, rather do it myself X_X wotnartd 06-07-2008, 01:33 PM get a referral...and I still do plenty of stuff around the house myself, believe me I could see you in a frilly apron with a feather duster. wotnartd 06-07-2008, 01:38 PM Right.... The only thing my folks hired out for is getting yard service (fertilizer and weed killer), but we're doing it now. $100T2 06-07-2008, 02:08 PM I mean yard work I have a maid for the house work :) Yeah, sure you do, Richie Rich. Ark2 06-07-2008, 03:02 PM maid doesn't = cleaning lady, not in my mind at least $100T2 06-07-2008, 03:26 PM what's so hard to believe about that? $14 an hour and worth every penny Luckily for me, my GF keeps the house clean for free. :) Although, she will dress up as a French Maid from time to time. :D Tofuball 06-07-2008, 04:19 PM If I had the money to blow, I'd pay people for services. Creating jobs and spending more time with the family is a good thing, but I'm hardly worth that much. wotnartd 06-07-2008, 04:24 PM Do you get summers off, Jason? Tofuball 06-07-2008, 08:43 PM No, but I get reduced hours w/ regular hours pay. I don't know how it's going to be with this new boss tho. $100T2 06-07-2008, 09:40 PM No, but I get reduced hours w/ regular hours pay. Hey, that's a nice gig. Tofuball 06-07-2008, 10:38 PM It is. The pay is not epic though (48K in this area is peanuts, average "starter" home price is ~$350K), considering I work for the school system :P Now if I went into the management track I'd be paid a mint, but it's not worth it. Tofuball 06-07-2008, 11:19 PM In the Dominican Republic, a fellow bought a house in trade for a pig. $100T2 06-09-2008, 10:37 PM In Canada, you can get a house for a red paper clip. 1revnrex, add that to your list of why Canada sucks, please. Tofuball 06-09-2008, 10:39 PM In Canada, milk comes in bags Totally related to augers :) $100T2 06-09-2008, 10:43 PM My pen still needs to be built. I made the mistake of letting the kids watch "Babe" today, now they want a pig, too. My GF wants a horse. It's turning into a fucking zoo here, I swear. wotnartd 06-10-2008, 12:13 AM Hey Tofu, move to WI. I'll be your kinfolk. $100T2 06-19-2008, 12:47 PM Here's the progress. We're getting the little shed moved into the new pen this weekend, and then that old ghetto shit will be taken down, and all the tree stumps will be ground out. I ended up making the new pen 40' x 40'. Zero 06-19-2008, 01:09 PM My pen still needs to be built. I made the mistake of letting the kids watch "Babe" today, now they want a pig, too. My GF wants a horse. It's turning into a fucking zoo here, I swear. From here on out... you will be known as Noah. $100T2 06-19-2008, 03:15 PM From here on out... you will be known as Noah. Yeah, except for that whole "christianity" thing. Tofuball 06-20-2008, 11:24 AM Dude, Noah was oldschool, he was BC, he was even before Moses and Abraham :P Vert8813B 06-20-2008, 11:28 AM Zoroastrianism is oldschool, son. $100T2 06-26-2008, 05:30 PM And here's where we're at after today. We need to get the mini barn positioned where we want it and leveled, and I have to finish doing the wire on the inside of the fence, but notice the ghetto, shit fence is gone, and all the stumps have been ground out. One of my friends owns a stump grinding business, and cuts me a wicked deal on grinding. $100T2 06-26-2008, 07:45 PM Yep. That's what sick time is for. :) It's hard to do any "real" work with my foot, though. I mostly get to direct, and sit on my ass in a chair and nail boards or staple fencing. I can't do any of the heavy lifting. I really wish I could have made the pen 40 x 80 or 40 x 120. We have the land for it, but I didn't feel like clearing more trees. |
