jetadrvr 03-25-2004, 07:52 AM ok, so i have a p.o.s. jeep and as usual i'm stuck pineing over one of my friends cars. so trey just got an '04 sti. its sick, plain and simple. sub-5 second 0-60 times, all-wheel drive, and a couple rally-inspired differentials make it damn near unstoppable. BUT, since i only have a basic knowledge of the ej20 motor, i'm not sure what kind of perfromance advice i should give to trey. he plans on doin the whole intake/exhaust/b.o.v. treatment, but does anyone know which intake/exhaust packages for this car privide the most power gains? the suspension is great, damn near perfect, but its got a lil more body roll than the Evo, and a little more pitch as well. can the stock suspension be tuned at all without major change? anyone who has any advice for trey please post up. keep it real homies.... - pimp wangsta flex Stegall 03-25-2004, 08:31 AM hows the system in it.. preludedude 03-25-2004, 08:34 AM hows the system in it.. what does that matter? Mark 95SE Cosby 03-25-2004, 09:10 AM what does that matter? Mark 95SE He's being sarcastic. This is tibby or cam's area. Cosby 03-25-2004, 09:23 AM tibby hasnt replied yet? Its been 15 minutes. He must be typing still... HTM Impreza WRX 03-25-2004, 09:34 AM lol....the sti won't need an uppipe because there is no cat there...the wrx has a precat before the turbo. there are lots of exhausts out there...the skunk2 provided the absolute most power. i personally have the m2. DO NOT BUY AN INTAKE FOR AN STi!!! he will run lean and blow the engine. don't set the boost higher than 17 psi. i'm late for work or i'd post more Cosby 03-25-2004, 10:01 AM hey tibby... jetadrvr 03-25-2004, 10:58 AM it doesnt have a radio, it came pre-wired for one from the factory, but theres no reciever and i'm not even sure if there are speakers int he door. Uglymexican19 03-25-2004, 11:10 AM turboxs has tons of stuff Stegall 03-25-2004, 01:57 PM intake will blow the motor huh..... JPAccord 03-25-2004, 02:44 PM 30,000 for a car with no radio. Im probably the only one who finds that troubling, since everyone else is about speed. oh well Uglymexican19 03-25-2004, 03:16 PM that car would not suit you one bit... it is more of the sports car enthusiasts. (btw, this is not bashing you at all aight) JPAccord 03-25-2004, 03:45 PM I know, and i agree. Im a sports car enthusiant, but not at the expense of certain features. Aspen_2.5RS 03-25-2004, 05:12 PM it doesnt have a radio, it came pre-wired for one from the factory, but theres no reciever and i'm not even sure if there are speakers int he door. There are no speakers in the doors. I sold the stock wrx receiver and speakers for $225 out of the wrx I parted, to give your friend an idea if he wants to go that route. The reason the car doesn't have the radio is b/c it's geared more for performance, but also to keep the weight down to compete with the Evo. That's why there are no factory fogs on an STi. The 6 speed is not indestructable either. I don't want to toot my own horn (toot....lol), but I was on a subaru program last summer with approximately 30 STi's. If you beat the hell out of this tranny it can break too. At the end of the summer there were several cars with bad synchros or they would pop out of gear. Of course, these cars were beat on pretty hard. Some of the people driving them were just learning to drive a stick !! Burnt clutch smell and clutch smoke were common. Cam Katana200sx 03-25-2004, 05:17 PM 30,000 and no radio irks u eh? pepsi spends 80,000 on trucks but cant spring for the $50 for a little radio...grrr Cosby 03-25-2004, 06:30 PM lol, bring a boombox nigga 91lx 03-25-2004, 07:59 PM if they wanted to reduce weight they should have ditched the awd system. surely it would be faster that way but traction wouldnt be as attainable i guess. Aspen_2.5RS 03-25-2004, 09:13 PM if they wanted to reduce weight they should have ditched the awd system. surely it would be faster that way but traction wouldnt be as attainable i guess. A. Subaru's angle is AWD B. The car would handle like crap if they went to fwd (and not as good as awd if they did rwd) C. The car would just smoke the front tires and do 0-60 in 7 seconds if fwd. Maybe it would be faster in a straight line after it caught traction, but in the twisties it would be an understeering mess. D. Lots of people buy these cars knowing that they'll need the awd in snow or adverse conditions one day. E. Subaru's angle is AWD Cam 91lx 03-26-2004, 12:18 AM i wasnt serious. can u imagine a 300hp 2500lb rwd impreza? drift :) Cosby 03-26-2004, 01:20 AM AWD = fun limiter if you want traction get slicks :) HTM Impreza WRX 03-26-2004, 04:11 AM yes...the engine will blow. because it has a newer type of MAF...the ecu compensates for the angle of the air coming into the MAF. if the angle is altered it will still have the stock compensation. it reads less air when the intake is installed...even though there is more, so it runs lean...so lean in a lot of cases...it's blown the engine. buy a K&N panel filter and call it a day. awd != fun limiter in the snow or mud. only in drivetrain loss jetadrvr 03-26-2004, 08:13 AM yes...the engine will blow. because it has a newer type of MAF...the ecu compensates for the angle of the air coming into the MAF. if the angle is altered it will still have the stock compensation. it reads less air when the intake is installed...even though there is more, so it runs lean...so lean in a lot of cases...it's blown the engine. buy a K&N panel filter and call it a day. awd != fun limiter in the snow or mud. only in drivetrain loss yeah i understand what your saying, but even with the drop in panel filter it will still flow more air than the stock paper filter....so wont it do the same thing that it would with piping and conical filter, but maybe to a lesser extent? and cant he just adjust the air/fuel ratio? 91lx 03-26-2004, 09:23 AM yeah i understand what your saying, but even with the drop in panel filter it will still flow more air than the stock paper filter....so wont it do the same thing that it would with piping and conical filter, but maybe to a lesser extent? and cant he just adjust the air/fuel ratio? hes just saying the angle is important to how the sensor is designed Texas89LX 03-26-2004, 10:16 AM MR > AWD for handiling cant beat it for polar moment, lower overall weight, and nearly similar off the corner traction HTM Impreza WRX 03-26-2004, 10:52 AM MR and AWD are more advanced driver friendly...the rewards are greater, but if you **** up in one and lose control...it's kinda hard to get it back. the awd is easier...but the MR sometimes isn't. like cody said...the angle is what's important...w/ just a panel filter, you will flow more air...but the stock setup are still there. Aspen_2.5RS 03-26-2004, 12:11 PM MR and AWD are more advanced driver friendly...the rewards are greater, but if you **** up in one and lose control...it's kinda hard to get it back. the awd is easier...but the MR sometimes isn't. like cody said...the angle is what's important...w/ just a panel filter, you will flow more air...but the stock setup are still there. MR cornering up hill < awd, other than that I can't say b/c I've never driven one. AWD is a lot easier to throw into a curve and not pucker your butt hole for going in too hot. I wouldn't put a k&n filter in it either (or if you do don't put too much spray on it). Since you need to oil the k&n and the maf sensor is sensitive to oil/dirt on it. Cam ok, thats all fine and good about the MAF sensor, but how do guys put intakes on their cars and the motors dont blow? there has to be some way around it Aspen_2.5RS 03-26-2004, 12:43 PM The best thing to do is to research it and come up with your own decision. Not every car is going to blow the engine. If tibby said the world was coming to an end tomorrow would you hide underneath your bed? You can read up on the intake issue on: www.nasioc.com (be warned there are lots of people who don't know crap on there) www.wrxhackers.com <---probably your best bet for getting good information. HTM Impreza WRX 03-26-2004, 03:13 PM so, just because I can explain what the hell i'm talking about makes me a know it all? If you look I said, NOT EVERYONE BLOWS THEIR ENGINE, BUT IT'S VERY RISKY.
