i took a few pictures... even if i WANTED to leave, i couldn't. you guys gotta remember a few things(or learn a few things, cause you didn't know my situation)

-i first found out that rita turned from a cat. 1 to a cat. 5 overnight. i went to work at around 9:30am i had NO idea it was a cat. 5 until around noon at work. none of the guys at work knew until the customers told us(discount tire)

-we were slammed at work yesterday... many people came in with flats and blown out tires. where were they gonna go? many of these people were from louisiana aswell.

- we didn't get off work until 9pm.. i couldn't even take a lunchbreak or any break throughout the whole day. i come home and tell my mom to get the fuck out of here and take our three cats with her. she left with my older brother to austin as i mentioned in the other thread. she left at 5am this morning and she isn't even halfway there. it's 2:15pm now. it takes 2 hours on a normal day to get from houston to austin.

-even if we wanted to leave right now, we couldn't... i have a little under 1/4th of a tank in our windstar. i drove around for an hour and a half to try and find gas. no dice! all the gas stations were out, ALL of them. all the highways were jammed from start to end. i'm stuck here even if i wanted to leave today. besides, i have too much pride and work into this house to just leave it. if you don't understand that, don't try to. it's not your decision so don't worry about it.

-there was/is absolutely no ply wood to buy.. not yesterday, not today. the only way that you would be able to board up your house is if you HAD the supplies to do so before yesterday. there is one guy on my street that was in the middle of extending his house... he had plenty of wood to board his up... he's the lucky one.

it's now 2:36 and i still haven't eaten anything. i'm gonna get some food after the pics. first a few shots of the house.

this is my "trip" in search of some gas. you can see some empty gas stations, mexicans out on the road... mexicans getting stopped and arrested by cops... mexicans sitting around just chillin on a restaurant shaped like a boat.

See if you can "borrow" some plywood from your neighbor that's doing the home improvement. Also go get a hose and a gas can to see if you can "borrow" some gas. I have a little generator at my house that will run the computer and fridge during an outage. Once my house is built I'll finish my 10kW diesel generator project and be able to power the whole house during an outage. I'd probably even be able to spare some for the neighbors that have a 100' extension cord.

Even still, you could have prepared a bit better, no matter if it was a cat. 1 storm....

Being that close to the last disaster would have made me think twice about what I could do in case things went up a few notches....

But like I said in the other thread, good luck riding it out... hopefully it won't go all to hell, even with you being out of the way....

im sure you know this but stock up on a whole lot of water and food that you can eat without cooking or heating... when i was little Hugo hit and they said we'd be without power for 3 days we wound up being without power for 13 days. i can still remember sitting under the stairs in a little closet in our two story apartment- and i was like 4 or 5. we wernt able to board up our windows in out apt so we put masking tape in a * kind of pattern.

rx-7_Z06

just go knock down some of the fence in your back yard. Use that to board up your windows. Its probably going to fall over from the wind anyway.

Some of the roads in lower Louisiana already have 5 ft. of water on them. The levee in the Lower 9th Ward has already been topped; putting 3+ feet back into the Lower 9th Ward.

But, like a reporter said last night, "The cities are already destroyed, what more could a storm do? Wash it out and clean it up a little?"

Right now, at my house, the wind is kicking pretty back, but it isn't really serious. When it actually does rain, it is very light rain that, due to the wind, comes down sideways.

It looks like Houston will be on the drier side, thankfully. Lake Charles/Orange/etc. might get fucked up pretty bad, though.

Good luck to you all!

The eye has made land fall finally. Hopefully, it will start to disipate quicker than it has already. They are still expected 12-24" of rain, though....

Cooper Anderson is in Beaumont, and he is experiencing gusts of 77mph. Not too bad.

Lake Charles, however, is going to get screwed up bad.

The wind is still kicking at, I guess, 25-30mph with gusts to about 45-50mph. This is all guesstimation, but I know that it is about the same as the tropical storms that I have been through; just a lack of rain. I mean, it's raining, but it is not really bad at all.

CNN is saying that buildings are already collapsing in Lake Charles, and some spots already have 10" of rain. It won't be pretty once the sun comes up. It looks like the majority of Texas was spared so far. At this point, the storm is not producing much on the west side; which is over Texas. The east side is just tearing up Louisiana, though.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso of Calcasiue Parish, La is on CNN right now. Sustained winds of 100+mph right now; no flooding so far in the east side of Calcasiue parish, but the west side borders the Sabine River; lots of flying debri from building/trees/power lines falling. Suspected 10,000 people still in Calcasieu, Parish. Calcasie has about 200,000 residents with its biggest city being Lake Charles.

So far, Houston/Galveston has lucked out. Get some pics, Hobo!
