They hurt our economy in more than one way.

1: They use our public roadways, resources, etc and don't pay income taxes.
2: Would you rather pay a mexican $5 an hour or a legit American $8 an hour for job? They won't argue, they won't complain, they won't voice any resistance... they'll just work. That really isn't what America is about.
3: The legal ones that get work contracts... come up here, work for 6 months, then go back to Mexico. They send 90% of the money they make back to their families in Mexico. A constant flow of money going OUT of our country, but not coming back in.
4: They're running around with the Mexican flag in OUR country they ILLEGALY fled to? Fuck that, I wasn't for violence... now I don't care.

I will say one thing for the illegals: they keep the price of produce a lot lower that it would be otherwise. I know the Napa/Sonoma wine industries would probably be in the tank without them.

A migrant worker program could be good or bad; it works well in Kuwait, where the government shells out $$$ to subsidize transit, food, etc. for the workers but that won't wash in the US. The European model has created ghettos of disempowered people who end up rioting. But the current US model creates undocumented persons whereby the honest ones are open to exploitation and the dishonest can exploit their invisibility to law enforcement.

IMHO the US needs to impliment a ground-up engineered process to allow the honest ones to 'come in from the cold' with a permanent, comprehensive program. Not the Reaganite one-time thing, because as we've seen, the problem is free to repeat itself in the not-too-distant future.

Allow Latinos and latinas (everyone talks about mexicans, but many also come from South America, through Mexico, and into the US) to register as migrant workers for a small fee as they cross the border - lower than the $$$ they'd pay the coyotes, but high enough to help offset admin costs. Have them photographed and fingerprinted, and have them check in with INS once every 3 months or so. The initial crossing can be made without set employment, but at the first 3 month INS check-in the worker must present valid employment documentation from a business registered and licensed to hire migrant workers.

Perhaps a business program could be implimented whereby certain industries, and licensed businesses within them, are permitted to hire migrant workers at government-regulated low wages provided there are no violations - as soon as one undocumented worker is discovered, they lose their license and are slapped with a large fine, which must be paid before their annual municipal business license can be renewed.

Migrant workers would be permitted to buy insurance, obtain licenses, etc. I forsee a subset of health insurance springing up to provide low cost insurance with slightly better than emergency-only coverage, perhaps through bulk contracts offered to the licensed businesses.

Picture it; a Latino crosses the border and has ID produced. At his first 3 month INS assessment he proves he's found work with ABC Fruit Pickers at $4/hr, and is licensed to drive the delivery truck. He's happy as a clam making what is for him a decent paycheque, and protected by goverment labour regulations pertaining to his special status. With money coming in and no fear of deportation he can work his way up to a full green-card and get a job in another line of work for minimum wage or better, eventually becoming a landed immigrant or even a citizen.

Meanwhile the industries which now employ illegals can continue to employ an inexpensive workforce without fear of being shut down if 'discovered' - as long as they hold up their end of the bargain by observing the regulated wages, producing employment documentation for every worker, and not lapsing and hiring true illegals.

Strong incentives for all involved, strong disincentives to continue the current system.

If illegal immigrants can get into this country, get a job, and pay their income taxes, they should be granted a green card automatically. If you pay your taxes, you're fine by me, no matter how you got here. I support the work program proposed in the recent legislation.

The FBI should round up all these damn protesters and demand proof of citizenship. We'll see who has the last fucking laugh. :)
