czarofzar 01-21-2007, 09:33 PM I wouldn't recommend it. But do tell if you do. http://www.glumbert.com/media/dryice Say No To Pistons 01-21-2007, 09:55 PM The Asian guy with the spiked up hair kept me from paying attention to the point of the video  . wotnartd 01-21-2007, 10:02 PM Where can one obtain dry ice? rodney87 01-21-2007, 10:07 PM you can get it at the local ice house around here....... edit: did those idiots just pick up dry ice with their BARE HANDS? wotnartd 01-21-2007, 10:17 PM Yeah, just not for very long. nowboostinII 01-21-2007, 11:43 PM so huh? what did the drop the dry ice into b4 inhaling? wotnartd 01-21-2007, 11:50 PM so huh? what did the drop the dry ice into b4 inhaling? A bottle of booze. Durrrr jhammons01 01-22-2007, 12:02 PM c'mon, Those guys are full of shit. The Alcohol is not "sublimating" by any stretch of the imagination. What you see is the Rapid return of Co2 to the Gaseous form. They are inhaling straight CO2. there is no Alcohol in the vapor. Simple test would be to check the volume before and after. It won't change and further more, To "Sublimate" Alcohol in earths atmosphere you'll need Heat, not a cooling effect. The Dry Ice is bubbling due to the massive temperature Delta. Similar to bacon on your Griddle. Bacon is not the only thing that will (pardon the scientific expression) "Sizzle". The Woozy feeling these idiots are feeling may be a result of lack of oxygen. When Inhaling CO2 you have displaced oxygen with a heavier gas therefore repeated inhalations will make you feel High or drunk when in fact you are drowning yourself and you don't know it. Please, Please, please try to ignore what you just saw in the video. Those idiots have enough knowledge to hurt themselves and with that video....others. wotnartd 01-22-2007, 12:28 PM I'll give it a shot, what the hell. barneymcveigh 01-22-2007, 12:37 PM i know theres a way to vaporize the alcohol in liqour so that way your inhaling straight up alcohol...you use a machine.....i forget exactly how they did it but im pretty sure that ive seen people do this...:40oz: jhammons01 01-22-2007, 12:46 PM Yes, by heating it.........See "Still" as in "moonshine" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still wotnartd 01-22-2007, 01:15 PM I'll do it in the name of science. I'll get a little breathalyser and really use science. The way they explained the reaction makes sense, though, the CO2OH bond. CO2 bonds with oxygen, which is in the ethanol. It would also bond with the H20, though, if I'm not mistaken, which would explain the fog we see, because it's a water vapor. FSURedFD 01-22-2007, 01:17 PM He said his name was Dr. Dick Wang....PAHAHAHAHAHAHA Supper 01-22-2007, 01:56 PM hah... go ahead and do it. It sucks to get high off of CO2. wotnartd 01-22-2007, 02:03 PM Not as bad as straight up carbon monoxide. We had a bad leak in our basement once, sit was baaaddddd. Made our cat retarded. The level was so high it started turning into alkalides (?). jhammons01 01-22-2007, 02:04 PM I'll do it in the name of science. I'll get a little breathalyser and really use science. It would also bond with the H20, though, if I'm not mistaken, which would explain the fog we see, because it's a water vapor. No, the vapor you see is pure CO2 Once you understand that Dry Ice is basically a gas compressed down into a liquid form......then released into a chamber (think about releasing compressed air, it gets cold) it then turns into a snow.....then it is packed into a snow ball or block of ice. So now you have 300psi + gas frozen and packed into a chunk of ice.........SOOOOO......now you have the ice chunk releasing the molecules and truly sublimating. So, you have a large volume of gas being released into the Bottle. That is the vapor that you are seeing. Ask me how I know wotnartd 01-22-2007, 02:27 PM But the gas isn't under high pressure anymore, right? It's at 1 atmosphere. If it decompressed quickly, it would just shoot out like a CO2 tank with a hole in it, right? Herschel 01-22-2007, 03:10 PM Not as bad as straight up carbon monoxide. We had a bad leak in our basement once, sit was baaaddddd. Made our cat retarded. The level was so high it started turning into alkalides (?). I had a retarded manx one time and he was a lot of fun. Probably one of the most interesting pets I've ever had. jhammons01 01-23-2007, 12:08 PM But the gas isn't under high pressure anymore, right? It's at 1 atmosphere. If it decompressed quickly, it would just shoot out like a CO2 tank with a hole in it, right? The ice is under the pressure. Once it sublimates in decompresses back to our atmosphere. That is why a little ice makes so much vapor. There is a lot of volume packed together. Understand, the term sublimation means Solid, liquid and vapor at the same time. For a very brief moment that substance is all three at once and then just vapor. If you compressed that Block of ice to 300 psi it would return to the liquid state. The only thing that occurred is the alcohol will now have a carbonation to it just like a soda or a sparkling water. As far as the pressure of the block of ice? Take a "nugget" (you see the kid putting a pelletized piece of ice in the bottle? That is what they refer to as "nuggets" in the dry ice industry) and put it in a coke bottle and close the lid tightly. Put the Bottle down and.......step way back. No, further back. wait......the nugget is sublimating and the pressure is growing dramatically. Soon the Coke Bottle explodes and it will be quite impressive. How did the Coke bottle explode? How many PSI does it take? Well let's just say less than 300 psi. That nugget somehow contained a lot of volume...enough to blow up a Coke Bottle......Yes even a glass bottle like an Apple Juice Glass bottle. Don't worry, 95% of the formally trained Engineers in America have a tough time understanding atmospheric properties of substances. I just happen to work in vacuum so it is everyday language for me. I have to know how substances are going to behave in various atmospheres be it pressure or vacuum. .....and yes, I have these discussions with kids that are semesters away from earning their PhD as well as those that have been in the private sector for Years. Manntis 01-23-2007, 12:29 PM But the gas isn't under high pressure anymore, right? It's at 1 atmosphere. If it decompressed quickly, it would just shoot out like a CO2 tank with a hole in it, right? CO2 that would shoot out of a tank is under pressure. AmishBoy 01-23-2007, 12:41 PM c'mon, Those guys are full of shit. The Alcohol is not "sublimating" by any stretch of the imagination. It's just a lack of oxygen. jhammons01 01-23-2007, 12:48 PM One last thing. The Dry ice being -70°C would actually move the alcohol further away from the state of sublimation. If you heat alcohol it sublimates and becomes a gas.......we commonly call steam. If you put a chunk of dry ice then the alcohol will cool. If you want to remove any hydrogen from a vacuum chamber you can do it with cryogenics. You take a cold finger and drop it down into the chamber. then in the cold finger (outside) you put dry ice and IPA. the Alcohol never freezes and gets very cold. Inside the chamber the Hydrogen molecules...."stick" to the very cold Finger just like your tongue would stick to a cold piece of metal. afterwards....you can poor the exact same volume of IPA (isopropyl alcohol) back into a jug for use the next day. Palumbo 01-24-2007, 03:06 AM jhammon, how do you know all these things? I assume you are Dr. Dick Wang in the video and your friend died after the experiment...I may assume incorrectly though =). jhammons01 01-24-2007, 10:49 AM Dry Ice? A.) I worked at a Dry Ice Plant in Carson when I first arrived in California. B.) I have a Degree in Physics C.) I sell vacuum equipment to JPL, Northrop, Lockheed, Boeing, UCLA, USC, Cal Tech, etc. One type of vacuum pump is called a "Getter" pump. this is the Tongue on the Cold metal thing I described earlier. Most commonly used with LN2, but some use Dry Ice and Acetone or IPA to achieve very cold temps. This is a poor mans Cryogenic Pump. There are much better and more reliable styles that are called Cryopumps. I have been dealing with CO2 off and on since '89 in a so many ways.......some I'd like to forget. I still have to deal with all the dry Ice plants in our region. All the Tanks used to store Liquid LN2 are all vacuum jacketed tanks. This is a Tank surrounded by Styrofoam and then another tank. They use vacuum to insulate the very cold LN2 from the ambient outside temp. All those tanks....every tank outside a hospital or research facility or processing plant or Grocery store all have one of these tanks. And all of the tanks have a vacuum gage on it. Somebody sells those vacuum gages......... Now, you know way too much about my mundane life. Manntis 01-24-2007, 02:28 PM We should talk about battery cooling systems sometime... it's sadly ironic that LiIon batteries, for all thier promise, have that inherent and nasty uncontrolled thermal runaway effect in anything bigger than a cellphone... wotnartd 01-24-2007, 02:34 PM Dry Ice? I was wrong, you're an opinionated asshole with a degree! :D jhammons01 01-24-2007, 05:02 PM Man, all this time I thought you were just some opinionated asshole. I was wrong, you're an opinionated asshole with a degree! :D No shit! I don't feel that I've done a days work without bagging on some idiots completely retard post. But then again, I like teh funay much better. some shit in this and other forums crack me up. there has just not been too much fun lately. Seems the real retards don't stumble into the lounge much anymore. Plus their threads just get closed. Then others are afraid to go for the jugular with the threat of banishment. YZF is just too predictable. Slingo got perma banned and SNTP won't teach him how to reset his router. Savington got banned and is too quiet over here Dorito seems to stay up in the Canadian section MakoRacingFC won't show his face in the lounge. NumbersGuy left SNTP can't stay long enough for a good laugh. I have to figure out it is him each time. Yesterday I thought he was one of the girls in that "5'6" too fat thread......the prospect that a girl caught some guy asking a car forum for advice about her weight excited me to no end....then it was just SNTP. can you imagine the let down? Batman is even quiet over here now. Parastie is gone TGLRK is gone TurboSE is gone Speed Monkey doesn't show MadRX7 got banned, came over here for a day......then gone to???? half the guys over here don't go over there anymore. We have the talent over here to really raise hell....just no blank canvass for us to unleash our talents. I need some good laughs. wotnartd 01-24-2007, 09:32 PM No shit! I don't even do much hardcore posting because, well, I don't have the attention span for it, I get bored and masturbate... And I still plan on the dry ice thing, just because a fogging bottle of booze seems cool. jhammons01 01-25-2007, 11:29 AM MakoRacingFC wasn't a shark, didn't race, and didn't have an FC. You remember that??? that idiot makes up a "defining" style Screen name that couldn't be further from what he was in reality. Redefines poser to say the least. Good times.....good times indeed. Supper 01-25-2007, 11:38 AM TGLRK is gone It seems to me that the Ask Me Anything thread was the beginning of the end over there. :tear: TGLRK was da bomb. wotnartd 01-25-2007, 11:47 AM You remember that??? that idiot makes up a "defining" style Screen name that couldn't be further from what he was in reality. And I was the one that started photoshopping fish bowl. :) I was never one for the kiddie pool, I just dive right in. I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but 2ndGen.rocket and I got into a little debate about proper grammar and commas. Because I was a noob, I knew nothing, but had great grammar. :) jhammons01 01-25-2007, 12:27 PM I don't remember that one.
