From what I heard, they had an Italian lip reader see what he said, and he had said something about his mother, who was recently diagnosed with cancer or something serious like it. So, I can't say I'd react differently.

First off, Zidane himself said that Materazzi had made no racist remarks. Then FIFA which concluded its own investigation also found that no racial remarks were made against Zidane. In an live interview Zidane said that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister, but again, the insult was not racist.
