thanks for posting, bx, MacArthur is one of the best, if not the best modern pastor/teachers...you can turn on hundreds of TV or radio shows and you won't here anywhere close to the depth (or accuracy) of teaching you get from him

the will to pursue God, to love God, only comes from God, not from anything within us (which is bent on rebellion)...the more I live, the more I know that's true

on the flip side, we must "make every effort" to pursue God, so it's not a cop-out for apathy

Though I would agree with you that Johnny Mac is a great teacher, how can this be proved? If you were to say "Well check the scriptures" this would be circular and could be claimed by any person calling himself a teacher. If you suggested that we observe the fruit of his labor, well then, the same could be said by any crackpot with a following.

My question is this, how does one identify another gifted by God to teach?

I was saying this to a jehovah's witness friend at lunch today. Tough question.

I've seen and heard alot of his peers :) most pale in comparison, but that's not to say there aren't other great teachers, I attend a church with one...Piper is another, I just don't care for his intense speaking style (his books are great)

how many pastors study the scriptures for 40 hours a week as John has done for about 35 years? how many are too busy playting golf? how many talk about the basketball game during a sermon?



Dallas Theological grads are a good start...but what I look for is in depth, verse-by-verse teaching

Yes but the jw teacher could be saying the same thing, that he studies the scriptures for hours on end and that he knows the truth.

I'm not suggesting any is right, what I suggesting is that it is difficult to determine who is and who isn't a good teacher.

Who ascribes the gift of teaching to someone that they theologically don't agree with?
