(Copy/pasted from the UK Rotary forum where I initially wrote/posted this)

So I was driving from a friends house to pick up some dinner when I got ran into. This is my first wreck in the UK, heck... it's my first accident ever! I'm now 25, I've been driving since I was 17.

So here's what happened:

I left my mates house (he lives just outside of my town) after ordering some oriental take out for dinner. I had just gone into/past the first roundabout directly before the town center when this rudeboy (british ricer) car came flying up on my rear (he was technically in the roundabout when I entered, but far enough away that the car to my right (two entrance lanes, I was in the left one, turning immediately left) and I were both in before he was around). He came riding up behind me close enough that I couldn't see his headlights at all (I've got a 1.5-2 inch drop due to my suspension). He was right up there. So I tapped on my brakes, just enough to have the lights flash. He's still there, right on my butt and not backing off at all. So I slowed down, I don't know about the rest of you but when somebody tailgates me like that I *don't* speed up, ever. I'll tap my brakes, than slow down, giving ample room between myself and the car in front of me in case THEY need to stop suddenly.

The roundabout where this guy came up on me is connected directly to a bridge with only one lane of travel in each direction. This is where I had slowed down (went from a quick boost up to 30mph as I entered/exited the roundabout, down to about 20mph, creeping towards 15 with him tailing me). At this point our common Einstein decided to overtake, without being able to see the oncoming traffic. ****.

He wasn't able to overtake (I *did* increase my speed a bit, I HATE people doing this to me) before he came over the crest of the bridge and saw headlights about 20-30 paces in front of him. Instead of doing what any sensable person would do (brake until there is a clear space to move back into YOUR lane) this guy just decided to merge into my lane. With me in it....

The end damage, this ****'s D-reg has some scratches on his front left bumper, the right side of my car (Left Hand Drive, '94 Touring Model) is well scratched up, with some major denting where the body meets the door and a bit of rippling from the middle of the door back. The damage goes all the way back to my rear tire (he scratched up my rim like curb rash as well).

Thankfully this guy's got insurance (swift cover, whatever that is) and I've got his details. I'll be contacting my local council tomorrow to request CCTV coverage. I immediately called my insurance company and notified them of the incident, then filled out an initial report. Afterwards I called the police and was told they weren't going to dispatch anybody since, well, it seems the police don't deal with automobile accidents unless somebody's been injured???

Unfortunately my camera is dead or else I'd be taking pictures right this moment of the damage.

Yes I did just give you shit for street racing (more for the attitude afterwards, because you failed to fully develop the scenario before you jumped into the narrative ^_^). However this had NOTHING to do with street racing, it was me driving into/through town to get some chinese food. And I do NOT fuck around whenever there is any kind of community/civilization near by. It can be 2:30am on a wednesday, with the streets devoid of life and I'll go 30 mph in a 30 mph, 40 in a 40, etc., etc. 50 + is fair game because those are away from habitation.

There was no room for him to pass, lol. He was driving dangerously and was going to cause an accident no matter what. If he didn't hit me than he would have hit the car in front of me, or cut in and slammed on his brakes so suddenly he would have caused several cars to become involved.

I don't really feel bad about it, especially not after he told me on the phone that I was going to get "A hit for a hit..." when I asked what that was supposed to mean he just said I'd find out. :nono:

I guess he was trying to intimidate/scare me :jerkit:

Lol, whining about how hard you had it growing up (as an excuse for who you are today?) and me venting about getting hit by some shitty british driver ISN'T exactly comparing Apples to Apples ;-)

^ Funny, I asked him that as well because he was being such a piss head. He's 39 and *supposedly* drives for a living (so he knows what he's doing)... though not for long after this probably. I plan on walking into the police station tomorrow and filing a report along the lines of reckless driving, vehicular endangerment and (as an aside) issuing a thinly veiled threat.

Aside from asking his age (and if he's always acted this way) I was very polite and in no way did my actions warrant his response (heavy tailgating, aggrivated/aggressive/erratic driving, etc., etc)... I'm tempted to get a transcript of the phone conversation where he, essentially, threatened me as well. Just as further evidence if need be ;-)

I guess he figures I'm toast b/c I'm a foreigner.

Yup... does kinda suck. What sucks more though, is that my insurance company isn't going to initiate the claim with his company. So I'll have to do the leg work on that one...

Time to go take pictures of the scene, draw it out, make a powerpoint, etc., etc. and mail it off to both companies. Good thing is that, from looking at his company, they should cover all the fee's since he's the one who caused the accident (he'll need a DAMN GOOD LAWYER to wriggle out of being found at fault...).

pics of the damage?

My camera's battery was dead last night, so I didn't get any pics then. Took some this morning before leaving for work, than again this afternoon. Uploading them now, will post them.

no frame damage at least, but I wonder how much that curvy FD sheet metal goes for these days, new from Mazda?

No idea.. but I've got some definite dents at the right angles where the door frame becomes the body =(

You should suddenly develop some neck pain...

Funny you should say that. It's the exact same thing the British police I spoke with this afternoon told me I should have said when I called to report the collision last night. That would have gotten them to come out and a police report filed. They won't respond to traffic accidents unless injuries occur.

Pics inc soon...

I need to get a larger shot of the whole side by daylight...

You can't really tell from the pictures, but there are fine scratches in the paint from about the middle of the door, back. It's not all as bad as I initially thought it would be, but I'm still gutted (Ark, "gutted" means very sad. I just wanted to point that out since you've shown an interest in British slang...)

I take it "ambulance chasers" are the type of lawyers you were talking about the other week???

I'll only get a lawyer involved if this guy tries to deny responsibility, or his company refuses to pay for my damages. I've got a record to maintain and going to court (even for something like this) will raise eyebrow's and not look good in the long run.

it still sucks though.

Yeah, it's really not too terrible, just will require a respray for the most part. However I *am* a little worried about the dimple in the body towards the bottom of the door, that's pushed in (right on the corner) pretty decently. Not sure how that will pull out.

I'm also concerned about the possibility of my car being thrown into the "totalled/salvage" category based off the exchange rate. Since the quotes will come in GBP, but I'm using USAA they will convert to a dollar amount.

I've seen (this past winter/early spring) an American M3 get totalled from hydroplaning on the highway and receiving body damage on the door and some paneling. Would have only cost a couple thousand to completely replace/fix everything. However, since the quote was in Pounds it pushed the damage up to $10k +, which totaled his car out. The guy just took it and got a new model M3 =P... there is NO WAY IN HELL I'd "just get an RX-8" if that happened though.

My only fear at this point :(

I don't think they will deem your damage to be worth totaling the car out and I believe they have rules against that for rare cars. Can't get that much more rare than an FD RX.

Money > Record IMHO.

My record = my future money :bigthumb:

If I were to ever get arrested, I'd have to find a new job. If I were to ever get a DUI, I'd have to find a new job. If I were to get caught instigating a fight in public, I'd probably have to find a new job.

Money (on the civilian side) in my line of work is good... Single salary in the states is 80k (if you're mediocre) starting out, if you're damn good add 10-20. Doing what I do down range (Iraq/Afghanistan) is up in the range of 150-200k a year.

Money is disposable, and I'll always get more. My record is invaluable...

You, a Jew?? Hmm... I guess that would explain why your relatives left Iran =P

All good heeb's know that sometimes you need to let a little bit of money go, in order to gain a lot back at the next turn... (I might as well be an honorary Orthodox, hehe)

a good body/paint man should be able to fix you up...you might just get a free paint job out of this, and it looks like you need it

At this point I do need a new paint job =P kicker is I JUST had her re-sprayed after I bought it two years ago. MAACO did the job so it wasn't the best, but I mean... I was planning on getting all the little bumps pulled/filled and a complete (high end) job done when I get back from my next trip down range too.. Oh well,
