$100T2 06-17-2008, 06:49 PM I need to build a chicken coop to hold 10 or so chickens. I'm going to google up some plans, but wondered what you guys might know about chicken coops. Lawns, fences, now chicken coops... This forum is turning into the fuckin' "Country Living" forum. :D jhammons01 06-17-2008, 07:12 PM I got nuttin' 2ndGen.Rocket 06-17-2008, 07:13 PM What the hell are you getting chickens for? jhammons01 06-17-2008, 07:14 PM J/k Just go buy some 2x4s, chicken wire and a staple gun. Hammer the 2x4s in the shape you want the coop to be in, then cover it with Chicken wire using the staple gun. then throw some chickens in there. Fiona 06-17-2008, 08:02 PM I had 32 chickens and 3 peacocks last fall. After the hungry critters got done with them this winter, I have zero chickens and zero peacocks his spring!! Damned raccoons, eagles, coyotes and cougars!! Oh, well, they gotta eat too I guess,,, Tofuball 06-17-2008, 08:52 PM Make sure you get a rooster or one of your hens will stop laying eggs and take the job up herself ;) That's what I read anyway, I don't know if it's true at all. They eat all your bugs. $100T2 06-17-2008, 09:29 PM What the hell are you getting chickens for? Dude, we already have 7 chickens. My GF loves them. Plus, fresh eggs kick ass. $100T2 06-17-2008, 09:29 PM J/k Just go buy some 2x4s, chicken wire and a staple gun. Hammer the 2x4s in the shape you want the coop to be in, then cover it with Chicken wire using the staple gun. then throw some chickens in there. That's a little too minimal for Rhode Island weather. I have to build a legitimate chicken coop. rtryb2200 06-17-2008, 09:33 PM Make sure you get a rooster or one of your hens will stop laying eggs and take the job up herself ;) That's what I read anyway, I don't know if it's true at all. They eat all your bugs. Especially Ticks!!! jhammons01 06-17-2008, 09:42 PM That's a little too minimal for Rhode Island weather. I have to build a legitimate chicken coop. You mean the little house they nest in? just go get a dog house and throw some hay in there. BackyardSog 06-17-2008, 09:48 PM My friend just made a chicken coop and I helped set up a little farm in there backyard. Basically it consists of two hinged doors on top with roofing material to keep water out and props that come up to hold them. Then it has a sliding front door for them to get in and out of. I will see if I can get some pics. Eatmyclutch 06-17-2008, 10:10 PM Chickens are winners. They eat all your bugs.Uhmm, yeah they do,, but they do keep laying. It's weird either way!! Fiona 06-18-2008, 12:28 AM The chickens will want to roost as high as possible so nothing eats them while they're sleeping. So, put a wooden rod up for that. Mine get up on the rod, about four feet up, and then jump up into the rafters. They also lay more in summer due to amount of light. There's an optic nerve connected to their laying mechanisms,, so to trick them into lying year round, I put a 100 watt bulb in the coop and just leave it on all the time. Good luck!! Misty Rayne 06-18-2008, 09:27 AM you can make like a mini shed for them some corrorgated iron for the roof and sides and double or even triple layered chicken wire for the front Vert8813B 06-18-2008, 09:29 AM All this talk of chickens makes me want some KFC, cuz. $100T2 06-18-2008, 11:47 AM you can make like a mini shed for them some corrorgated iron for the roof and sides and double or even triple layered chicken wire for the front OK, I'm also trying to make it non-ghetto. LOL, show that to some PETA people and the FREAK! I think that they have some vids of cutting of the head of a chicken too! vrooom305 06-18-2008, 03:17 PM holy crap that's a really good way of taking out the feathers! I didn't think it would work like that. I thought I was about to see some ground chicken. Tofuball 06-18-2008, 05:21 PM I'm sure sane people do that after the chicken is dead. jhammons01 06-18-2008, 08:19 PM would it matter either way? The Chicken would be dead after it came out no matter if it was alive or dead when it went in... |
