Forget Maria... Dementiava (sp?). Uber boinkability!
Palumbo: I've been playing since I was 8. I wasn't into it much the last two years until this spring/summer (health reasons). This summer I reapplied myself to see if I could still get out there and play up to my old level after the issues I went through health-wise.
I'm not quite up to where I used to be, but honestly my serve is probably better than ever at this point as I've been practicing on that area a ton this summer (partly causing my tennis elbow). I'm finally getting everything else up to speed, only to have this setback with my elbow
From about the age of 9 through Jr. High I was in clinics that generally ran 5 days a week, 3 hours a day during the summer and an hour or two during the school year. I was set to go Varsity my freshman year of highschool, only to get sick and not even pick up a racket for well over a year (ironically, I was just talking about this at dinner tonight - I still get pissed over that. It's one of my few regrets of my life, and I couldn't do shit to avoid it).
When I was between the ages of 8 and 10 I finished runner-up twice and I think 3rd once in my clinics' tournaments. I played in a few tournaments here and there in Jr. High, but never did all that well (damn lack of self-confidence as a kid!).
I was playing about 3-4 times a week this summer until July, when all hell broke loose and I got a nasty head cold from my nephew (along with half the rest of the family), then got pink eye, followed up by a nice case of "not strep throat" that caused my right tonsel to swell up to the point I couldn't eat or even turn my head  I'd like to strike July from the record, please....
Anyways... my goal is to get back to the point of entering tournaments by the end of this year or early next year. I need to work on my conditioning to do so - I used to go five sets, 4+ hours with no problem, now I start dragging after a couple hours. Getting older blows.
I've yet to win a match this summer (only played 3), but I'm chipping away. I lost Sunday night 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, and that was with basically no serve due to my elbow. I played the same guy the week before and lost 7-5, 6-2, 4-1 (lights went out). Prior to that I lost to my best friend that I always play against 6-0, 6-1 (ug) - that was my 2nd time back from July, and he's been playing with a co-worker several times a week, along with entering some tournaments. Regardless, I was pissed - the first set was over in about 15 minutes (I won 3 points all set I think).
On to Federer... I love the guy, but dammit I hate him too! Same thing as Sampras, he has a knack of getting in the way of Agassi. Agassi has always been my favorite player, and I was really hoping he could somehow pull it off against Federer, but didn't see how it could happen. No one can beat Federer right now - I fully expect to him to break Sampras' Major Titles record (with six at the age of 24, he has at least six years left to get what, 7 more to tie?).
I would have to agree that Federer is one of the best athletes in the world right now - he's the Michael Jordan of tennis. I was dreading that Agassi would announce his retirement after losing the final - he looked devastated afterwards. He has nothing to be ashamed of, though... most players probably would have lost in straight sets.
So how about you (now that I've rambled on for a few pages)?
