I was selling a fender bass to a guy yesterday and this rifle worked it's way into the deal.
It's a Czech Mauser 98 in 8mm, it's pretty beat looking with some pitting in the bore, but it feels sound action wise.
I bought a box of ammo for it, but I'm kinda nervous about shooting it. It probably hasn't been fired in 50 years, you wouldnt believe the kinda shit I scrubed out of the barrel.....

I would take it to a gunsmith just to make sure. It's the barrel condition I'm worried about, oh and I would also ask if it was modified to fire another round, which sometimes does happen with those old 8mms.

^ I agree. Firing an unfamilar gun is nerve racking, one that hasnt been fired in 50 years could literally explode in your hands.

I would at least take it somewhere that they could run a borascope down the tube and tell you how fucked up the internals of the barrel are.

It's factory 8mm.
The bore has moderate pitting. actually quite a bit of pitting. but that shouldn't be dangerous should it?
I'm gonna wear my helmut the first time I shoot it though,LOL

Oh stop being a pussy it will be ok. I have shot maybe 50 of those things just like you described. Those are allot tougher than most new rifles.
A Christian would have just shot it and not been a baby about it.

On one hand, old world manufacturing in weapons can't be beat. You can probably go out and fire a few rounds with no worries as long as you cleaned it.
Accuracy will be crap, and it will be unreliable at best.

But it's dead reliable.
Can't be worse than my friends shitty Kimber. Maybe the tolerances will loosen up in a few years, or at least that is his excuse for the jam machine.
