So this is what I went with:
Quad-core q6600 @ 2.4ghz
4gb (2x2gb) g-skill 1066mhz DDR2
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard
Gigabyte nvidia-based 512mb memory video card (Pci-Express 2.0 16)... i forget which version etc, doesn't matter.
Anyhow... what I wanted was a good multi-tasking machine for everyday power usage, which is why I went with quad-core. I wanted to stay XP-Pro. Some people argue that quad-core is pointless on XP as it doesn't utilize all cores correctly. As of SP3 updates, (I did before and after tests) XP utilizes the cores MUCH better. I did want to be able to play games as well, so I got an okay video card, but didn't want to break the bank on something I won't do that much of... I can always upgrade in the future (not to sli, only one pci-x 2.0 slot is 16x, the other will run 8x.)
I DID want to overclock... so I paid an extra $30 for an arctic-cooler, bought arctic silver 5, and made sure I got components that were meant for it.
Right now, I've overclocked the 2.4ghz q6600 to 3.2ghz and I'm seeing temps of 31C at idle/normal usage, and around 38 under a heavy load... very good. (60 is about the max you want, and 25 is about the lowest you can go.) Some people are overclocked to 3.6ghz (from 2.4ghz) and running fine on air cooling... I'll eventually get there, but I'm going to upgrade the case fans first. The motherboard, memory, and cpu all got GREAT reviews for overclocking... I originally was going with the 2.66ghz quad-core cpu, but it had less l2 memory for 1, and 2 people were getting better overclocking results with the 2.4. I can say so far... 4 cores running at 3.2ghz and bumped up memory/fsb speeds is pretty nice... :) I did bios overclocking first just to play around, but I set everything back, and used the overclocking software that came with the motherboard... it's awesome. It saves youa lot of time calculating, double-checking, etc, and does all settings at once... it has a nice hardware monitor too. I haven't touched the video card yet... but, again, it recommends overclocking on the damn box... should be cool.
I did a video-encoding test: With everything stock, 8 minutes. The first bump to 3.2... took it down to 5 minutes. We'll see what the jump to 3.6 does.
How much did it cost? $650 for all parts shipped. I got an XP pro license for free, so if you needed that and wanted the same setup, it'll cost you $140. I'm running a cheap 350w power supply that came with the case... I've used mannyyyy of these before and had good luck... I'll see how it holds up to my torture tests... worst case scenario, I'll upgrade for $50.
The only other thing I'm going to buy is a couple of fans... I'm happy so far. I would've liked to get SSD or a velicoraptor... but just didn't see the benefits being justified. I also was going to run RAID 0 simply for performance, but decided not to.

Just ran a test:

Wow... The water/fire and everything looks realistic... amazing to me... of course I haven't touched a video game in years. I remember getting ~50fps in games before... this shit is crazy.
crap... just got a BSOD... hopefully that's the only time it'll ever happen.. but, that's unlikely. I'll be running hardware tests tomorrow... I was going to anyway, but bleh, gotta play with the new toy first. I suspect memory.
BSOD again... set back to stock settings...
(just keeping this here in case I need the info elsewhere instead of keeping it on my pc)

Anguissette 02-28-2009, 04:12 AM Meh, damn blue screens... I am curious to see what video card you're using, only because I just updated mine today, well..yesterday. I had to get rid of my integrated Intel graphics. I was going crazy trying to use 3d analyze on every damn game...
Good luck with the BSOD. If you don't mind me asking, what codes are popping up under the 'technical information' anyway?

Oh I'm going to get it ironed out... just going to look at some fun for the summer in a second. :)

Due to lack of case fans... I'm thinking that the system temps were just too hot, probably affecting the memory. I just need time to play with it... I'll get some benchmarking or burn-in software and target each component, particularly the memory. Any recommendations? Been a while since I messed with it.
As far as the technical information... BSOD for .1 seconds, then reboot... doesn't stay up there. I'm thinking memory... could have just been the heat... I'm going to order cooling shit today.
Dummy me didn't even check the fan settings... it was barely being utilized, like maybe 20% of it... back to 3.2, fan settings altered, and running good so far... lets see if I get any BSOD's.
Oh, I bought a book today, and a boat. Anyone care to guess which book? :)

Well, that's good. Hopefully it all works out just fine.
Nice card btw. I just picked up a 9400 for about 30 bucks after rebate...was completely eyeing that 9500 though. *sigh* Oh well!
And I'd attempt to guess what book you bought, but I haven't the slightest idea about your literary interests...

Mein Kampf?
czarofzar 02-28-2009, 09:55 PM book 'how to turn on the power supply?' hahahahahahah. yeah anyway...
impressive, zero. I wish you lived near me. I just might buy your wares.

I thought it was a good deal bang-for-buck... I'm getting 130fps steady on CS servers with the highest settings... pretty cool looking, water and stuff looks real.
Mein Kampf?
Fight Club... freaky story behind it too... I was in the mall (and it was goin down)... I strolled in barnes and noble. The search computer was broken... so I walked to fiction... there was like 5 aisles... I said "hmmm... I know it'll be here..." and there it was eye-level... I was drawn to it.
Squirrel 03-01-2009, 04:20 PM i know you didnt want to break the bank... but a 9500gt... come on...
For the minimal gaming I'll do... I'm more than happy with the performance. 150fps in game... Yeah, I think that's more than enough for most "gamers" that live for that shit

what bench did you use?
what bench did you use?
None yet... but in CS you can monitor your in-game fps and other things... it displays them in the corner. On the video stress test, I'm getting 250-260FPS. The way that works is that it has a little map thing it escorts you through with water, fire, and moving things to see if your computer can handle it. In game I get 130-150 depending on latency... that's at stock settings and overclocked... seems that the network is the bottleneck there.
So I've figured out the bsod... one program is doing it, only when overclocked. This particular program has a very bad history with memory management anyway... always screwing up. This particular program is also used by me frequently, basically to cover my ass with proxies.
No solution yet.

Nope... I don't do anything illegal at all, except for downloading torrents, big whoop... but I post on several forums, and don't like the banhammer. I'm pretty safe on most, so I'm not really sure while I still use it.
