czarofzar 07-10-2008, 09:59 PM Awash in oil money, and problems
Energy Hunt: Fort McMurray was a sleepy town on the Canadian frontier until oil transformed it into a boomtown with tons of opportunities
"You can say all the bad things you want about this town," challenged Jesse Brether, a Ft. McMurray Oil Sands worker. "You know what? For fifty dollars an hour, I'll deal with it... I'm making over a hundred thousand dollars a year, and I'm twenty-two!"

They lack relevance. If the idea is that god is not idle, why would he let his religion die? Say what you will about the Hebrew God's religion, but you cannot deny its perseverance. For thousands of years it has survived, often despite great attempts to eradicate it.
The problem with your questioning, is that you are looking at it only from one perspective, drawing a comparison between Hellenism and Christianity to point out the possibilty that Christianity may be a myth. The inverse is noticing that one religion has died while another thrives, using it as proof that the Christian God does in fact exist because He is actively involved in keeping it alive.
What does this all mean? Basically your question plays to both sides of the argument, which, while its consideration may act as some sort of mental exercise, is not really worth answering.
Contrary to what the thread title might lend one to believe, there is such a thing as a bad question, and you just asked it.
wtf
wotnartd 07-10-2008, 10:56 PM Wow, czar.... that's so unintelligible... it's like... dude.
RyanFlemington 07-11-2008, 11:00 PM all of alberta, and nothern BC are like that. Starting wage at Tim Hortons(huge canadian coffee place) is something like 22 bucks an hour. Definately where the money's at, though rent's pretty pricey.
2ndGen.Rocket 07-12-2008, 11:20 AM You know what a boom is followed by? A bust. Whatever the hell those chumps are making, I guarantee you they won't be soon. It's all temporary.
This sort of thing happened to Alberta during the 70's. Then things crashed and everybody who moved there for the money went back to Ontario. Plus, the cost of living over there is pretty expensive right now.
It's all relative. The bad things are a huge drug trade, lots of crime and violence, and close to million dollar starter homes.
This boom is not good for anything except for being able to get damn near any job you apply for. But wages haven't met cost of living(unless you were set before). But the dumbass government will continue to whore out this province simply for the cash until there is nothing or no one left
czarofzar 07-12-2008, 05:04 PM How much money do you want to make with your time? You will survive after a crash. With the seed money that you saved, start your chosen path in another place. Buy education. buy house/ real estate with hard cash. etc etc etc
Just depends on what you want to do. I've thought about going there for the summer myself, but it's pretty good where I am right now. For those who do go, I just wouldn't get too comfortable.
czarofzar 07-12-2008, 06:56 PM For those who do go, I just wouldn't get too comfortable.
you are not Being clear.
When trying to reach a crucial step in your goal, your last obstacle prior of that step is being too comfortable to start the next. A fucked up town like that is ideal for you to push you along.
I meant with regards to buying a home, starting a family, digging in... that sort of thing.
nathantheman 07-12-2008, 07:17 PM yeah i spent some time working in up ft. mac. the money was fantastic, but the whole town has these hollow people, who suffer through the bitter winter to make all their money, and spend it all at the casino and on drugs that they get from the neighborhood crack den. it really a disgusting, filthy place, where everyone is high on something, and their values are terribly skewd. a single bedroom apartment rents for 1500-1700 ish per month
czarofzar 07-12-2008, 08:34 PM good, smoke weed for a few years while earning bucks. whats wrong with that?

You've obviously never been around an oil boom before. After the one here crashed in the mid 80's the most popular bumper sticker to be found read:
"Dear Lord, please let it boom again. I promise not to piss it all away this time!"
I've never met a "typical" oilfield worker that saves anything during a boom.
2ndGen.Rocket 07-12-2008, 10:40 PM ^
Exactly.
czarofzar 07-12-2008, 11:17 PM yer not listening.
I need you all to gather around and listen up.
turn the transistor radio up and pay attention to czar here.
I promise you you wont turn into a retard like what supper experienced. boomtown forefathers are telling you 'all you have to do is to save your money'.
you need money. Grab that fucking fat money and leave. whack off to porn if you have to.

2ndGen.Rocket 07-13-2008, 10:26 AM Dude, you're not dropping advanced knowledge here, we get what you are saying. The point is, no one cares because no one is going to move to some shithole in BC in the hopes of making six figures while working some shitty oil rig job.
lol
Well said. It's not restricted to just BC though. Same thing is happening in Alberta and Calgary is absolutely beautiful.
The problem is if you are not working in the boom trade you become working poor because cost of living went up much quicker the wages. Things are finally slowing down though. People are starting to go to Saskatchewan.
Though if I was smart I would of bought a house or two a few years ago and sold them about a year/six ago and made myself some tidy profit, but I'm not smrt.
2ndGen.Rocket 07-13-2008, 11:28 AM That would have required you to predict oil prices shooting through the roof, and that drilling in North America would once again become profitable. And if you could predict something like that, you should be day trading, not working on an oil rig.
Southern Ontario (NOT TORONTO!!!!)

Too bad I'm not doing either

woah, way off their buddy, they do not make that kind of money, Tim Hortons is minimum wage throughout Canada.
maybe 8.50 per hr.
wotnartd 07-14-2008, 09:42 PM Well fuck, I'm moving to Canadia.
czarofzar 07-14-2008, 09:50 PM sissys....imo
Calla-lilly 07-14-2008, 10:38 PM some hate the truth, I can accept that.
Supper 07-28-2008, 10:34 PM I had a good conversation with some API inspectors earlier today. We were discussing earning potential vs certification when it comes to the oilfield. Inspections is one place were earning potential is directly proportional to how much money you spend on certification rather then just becoming a truck driver or other bonehead job (roustabout, welder's helper, etc).
Anyway, we figured up the average annual salary of an "inexperienced" (less then 5 years with the cert) API inspector and it came out to ~ $120,000 a year. This is based off of a 40 hour work week with no OT. If you kick OT in with the average of 20hrs OT per week, you start talking close to $200,000 a year.
I'm already signed up for the API test in december, big monay here I come!
czarofzar 07-28-2008, 10:36 PM good man :)
see ya at the next big one
Supper 07-28-2008, 10:43 PM was it you that is the welder, czar?
If so, get your ass up here to Rawlins. Welders are makin bank right now and they are begging for anyone that can pass the quals.
czarofzar 07-28-2008, 10:47 PM I can only do downhill welding atm. im not there yet to get that cert but im close. anyway, I have a cushy office job. beats working outside.
Supper 07-28-2008, 10:52 PM fuck a cushy office job.
All my coworkers think I'm nuts, but I enjoy working out in the Unit on the hot equipment. Had my ass crammed between two ~350° exchangers for a few hours today. Felt like sitting in an oven at first, but then that heat just started to soak into your bones and just felt extremely relaxing.
czarofzar 07-28-2008, 10:58 PM welllllllll, you know, my mind loves the working with hands but things are starting to break down on my body. Although welding I can handle (I'll make the apprentice work his ass off), the heat as gotten old. I am designing with autoCAD which means I can stay inside in a cool environment yet still working my mind without numbing body parts.
2ndGen.Rocket 07-29-2008, 05:06 PM We'll see how awesome sitting between heat exchangers is when you're 40, your joints are aching, you have a fucked up back, and various other problems.

Ever wonder why people go to spas and sit in places that get hot and humid? Its rather relaxing/therapudic. You can just admit that it makes you jealous that some "uneducated laborer" is going to be making just as much money as you and might actually enjoy it.
And BTW, most of my co-workers are over 40 and have been in this industry a very, very long time. Not to mention that if a person gets their API certs, the sitting on hot vessels and actually working hard thing basically comes to an end. After that point you are more so paid for your knowledge then then your labor.
:smacktalk::screwyou::blah:
Supper 07-29-2008, 07:32 PM Not only that, but I don't have to pay for a gym membership! I get to climb around on the big kids jungle gym all day and get paid for it too!!!

I'm not talking about the heat smart guy, I'm talking about manual labor.
I don't have a whole lot to be jealous of. First, your assumption about money is about 9 miles off base. Second, it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. You enjoy not using your brain and cranking a wrench around? I'm sure you really put some stress on on the mind doing that.

Juding by your complaints about being overweight, maybe you should get a gym membership.
Supper 07-29-2008, 10:31 PM Juding by your complaints about being overweight, maybe you should get a gym membership.
I think you need a ladder to try and catch that one...
2ndGen.Rocket 07-29-2008, 10:32 PM I'm right there with ya big guy.
Supper 07-29-2008, 10:38 PM First, your assumption about money is about 9 miles off base.meh. the only reason I'm even caring about money right now is I'm still a week off till my first paycheck. Once the money starts going into my account in a reliable manner it will be the farthest thing from my mind.
Second, it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.sure it does. I'm bored, I'm stuck in a motel room for work, so its relevant.
You enjoy not using your brain and cranking a wrench around?you obviously don't have the first fucking clue about what I do for a living as well as not a clue about the industry I work in. Sure, I'm associated with the oilfield, but thats as close as I come to "cranking a wrench around" for work.
I'm sure you really put some stress on on the mind doing that. You can't even fathom how mentally challenging my job really is.
2ndGen.Rocket 07-29-2008, 10:41 PM I'm sure I can't, it's probably way over my dumb office job head.

Have a little respect for the blue collar guys. Some of us do think as while we work for a living, and enjoy both aspects of it.
