It's just so depressing...

Have you ever thought about baiting and waiting for the house to get trapped?

renting on a college budget sucks, because you are usually stuck with roommates, who tend to be adolescent slobs

That has been the case for the last two years (especially this year). But next year will be different because I'm only living with people who I've lived with in the past and that I know aren't slobs. Next year should be interesting though. I'll have a small number of roomates, plus I won't even be going to school on account of the internship.

Instead of hunting, go trapping.

Houses are nocturnal.

heh, house hunting does kinda suck.

I'm still fighting real estate problems.... The house I just bought (closed 11 Jan 08) is under foreclosure!

I can't say for sure, but I'm fairly certain that my sellers bought the house as a foreclosore and flipped it. What I think happened is their title company missed one of the foreclosed-on liens, it went neglected while they owned it, and it recently got turned over to collections. The only thing I have to do with it is the property address, the names on the liens and the mortgage information are unfamiliar to me, never had any business with the bank.

So i'm fighting with my title company trying to get this cleared up, as my house is apparently going to auction 20 March 08...

I suggest you two just relish this moment. Maybe invite each other over for a weenie roast.

Did you get title insurance when you bought the property?

Renting is the last thing that I want to do. I'd much rather buy a house and charge 1 or 2 people rent. That way you can pick who you live with and if there pigs you can kick them out. But I guess you cant do that if you plan on leaving the area in the future...

That is usually a fail-safe plain, however home prices are still dropping and are likely to continue on the same trend for a while.

Ark, I don't know what methods you are using for your search. I do know that sale prices and rental prices are both dropping pretty drastically in the U.S. right now, but I'm sure Canada is remaining pretty stable. Your best bet is to find a place that someone is already residing in but looking for a roommate. I've generally found that someone who has a decent place and is looking for someone to supplement the rent is usually a fairly responsible and clean person. There are of course exceptions, but do some searching and you'll find someone.

Do they have Craigslist in Canada? That usually provides a wealth of listings along the lines that I'm talking about.

*Nevermind, they do have Craigslist in Canada. I have no idea where you live there, but check out "rooms/shared" section.
