Got the boat all prepped Saturday, and took it out Sunday for a few hours. The location is "Monocan Park" in Amherst, VA. It's quite a little drive but the big lake here had the Bassmasters competition (Filmed & covered by ESPN) this weekend and the large amount of fisherman using public ramps just would've been annoying.
Monocan Park is a dammed up part of the James River owned by AEP. It has some pretty deep spots, over 150' I believe, but some very shallow parts too. At one end there is a sand barge that you can drive up on and park... but our depth finder wasn't working, so we couldn't get to it as there are some very shallow parts and certain trails you need to take in the water to get to the barge. It's very nice, at one point we were just chilling for about half an hour, heard/saw no other boats or sign of humans, only the birds chirping and the waterfall on the other side of the dam.

LadyNix 04-28-2009, 10:10 AM Lucky. I love boats, fishing and just pondering in the middle of nowhere.
Sold the seadoo last year =( sad deal now all it is for me is shore line fun.
Any coves up where you were at?
Sucks you didn't have a depth finder, I love finding the smaller coves and chillling alone. Up here where I live we have a place called Hell's Gate, it is now illegal to jump off of the mountain leading off of it, my parents had a friend die before doing it some didn't. But the cove is awesome just way over crowded.

I had a jet-ski last year... it's really fun, but gets old within an hour or two especially if you don't have a boat to dock with, luckily I did every time... I think the boat will be more fun.
I live about 25 minutes from here, and I'm moving within 10 minutes in the next couple of months:

500 miles of shoreline... some very secluded and peaceful coves... but the "main channel" is also EXTREMELY busy and there's some rather big boats out there. There's a place called "bridgewater" that we typically dock at and each lunch every day. It has 6 or 7 restaurants, boating supplies, gift shops, arcade, outdoor games, all kinds of stuff.
Most of it is surrounded by mountains. There is a big rock wall section that you can jump off of, but nothing like what you had pictured, that looks awesome. The "cliffs" offer 10, 20, and 40 foot jumps. During the summer, it's nothing to see 30+ boats just chilling there, people jump off and swim to them, climb up this little path then jump off.... even little kids. It's pretty entertaining to watch and the water is extremely deep below them.
There's also a small island with a beach on the backside that most people don't know about, you can drive straight up on it, rope the boat off and chill. Some people even tent-camp there overnight.
There's all sorts of stuff, it's the only good thing about this area.

Touche on the boat. Very true. They're great when you have kiddos too, I personally don't have any childeren but on the weekends when I was little, when we weren't travelling to Car Shows we would be at the lake and there was nothing better then headin out with the pops and they're asses laughing when I got thrown off the floating devices as they drug me along on.
Gorgeous lake I could only be so lucky to live so close to on. All we have here is dirt and p.o.s ponds haha.
But as for that cliff its awesome but many people have died jumping off of it. ;) I'd have to say tho that would be awesome to atleast try it once. But water level here has decreased so much. There was a little mountain all by itself at another lake called Quartz Mountain, it was awesome to jump off of it but the shoreline is now the cliff. Sucks.
Oooohh... Gift shops eh? Hmmm they're are some lakes kinda like that in Dallas but yours sounds fun. Nice way to treat the lady.

The fishing at SML is a goldmine to some. Like I said, ESPN covers fishing tournaments there, and I've seen blips about all kinds of records being pulled out of that lake. I know there's catfish, carp, all types of bass, pike, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but the big thing is striper bass... like 50 lb ones.
Yeah PWC's are allowed in both monocan park & SML. I spent much of last summer on mine at SML, but never went in monocan... I'm sure it's good considering the water is so calm there. If wakejumping is your thing, SML is the place though....
You can probably be there in 3 hours YZF.

I absolutely love it... it's a good mixture between all out nature and other stuff... when it's 100 degrees, docking and sitting down in the shade or a/c to eat for an hour or so is nice...
Any of you know anything about waketowers?
